Dudley’s Love for The Heights Brings Him Back
November 06, 2015 | Men's Basketball
The Washington Wizard stopped by Conte Forum for the Eagles’ exhibition game on Thursday night
Last night, as the men's basketball team played its season-opening exhibition game against Bentley, there were many fans in the stands excited to get their first look at the 2015-16 squad.
One fan, however, stood out more than most. Jared Dudley '07 swung by The Heights last night and was one of those fans in the Conte Forum stands.
Originally coming over to campus to shoot a video with the Washington Wizards, his current NBA team that's in town to play the Celtics tonight, Dudley soon realized his former team had a game. It worked out well.
"I didn't even know they had a game tonight," Dudley said. "Usually I like to come on campus and we were going to do a little interview here."
Dudley got a chance to see Jim Christian's new squad and re-connect with folks on campus, something he tries to do at least once a year.
"For me, it's an honor coming back," Dudley said after the Eagles' win. "I love this school. It helped me grow from a boy to a man. The memories I have from four years here – it's literally like my second home besides California."
Dudley arrived shortly after tip-off and watched the Eagles face Bentley. Familiar faces from the Athletics Department soon stopped by to say their hellos and the forward drew a rousing round of applause when he was showcased on the HD video boards during a time out. At halftime, he greeted every one of the fans who waited patiently to meet him.
After the game, Dudley got a chance to swing by the Eagles' locker room and spend a few minutes with the players, something he loves to do when his schedule permits.
"For me, I love to be able to help out the team, talk to the new AD," Dudley said. "I'll be entrenched in this University forever."
Dudley is optimistic about the Eagles' direction under Christian – "There seems to be a new wave of energy that he's trying to bring here" – and has words of advice for the current squad, which includes seven freshmen and nine players without previous NCAA playing experience.
"You've got to trust each other and know that there are no stars," Dudley said. "A star will come out, usually when you play together. You've got to trust your coach. When I was here, we played for Al Skinner and we had to believe in his system. Even if you lose a game or two, know it's a process. From my freshman year to my senior year, we trusted it and that's why we were so successful."
While Dudley admits it's harder to keep up with the Eagles during the NBA season while he's on the road, he is looking forward to March when the Eagles heads to Washington.
"They're coming to the ACC Tournament in D.C., so I'll hopefully check out a few games there. I can't wait to see this program get back to where it was."
