Thatcher Demko's unprecedented October resulted in Hockey East Goaltender of the Month honors
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Junior goaltender Thatcher Demko was heralded as the Stop it Goaltending Goaltender of the Month as announced by Hockey East Wednesday after an historic October performance.
The San Diego native posted a 5-1-0 mark and yielded only one goal per game (1.00 goals against average), closing out the month with three-consecutive shutouts.
The 6-foot-4 goaltender strung together a shutout streak that lasted 206 minutes and two seconds (206:02), spanning from the end of the Rensselaer contest (Oct. 11) to the beginning of the Denver game (Oct. 30). It marked Boston College' second-longest shutout streak in program history.
The three-consecutive shutouts denoted only the 21st time in college hockey history a goaltender had not allowed a goal in three-straight games. It marked the fourth time in program history that Boston College had denied its opponent a goal over the course of that many games, joining Cory Schneider (2005-06), Scott Clemmensen (1997-98) and in 1919-20. BC is now the only program in college hockey history to have strung together three-straight shutouts in the modern era.
Demko anchored the Eagles' best defensive effort to start a season in program history. Boston College's 0.60 goals allowed per game through its first five contests of the season is the lowest mark in BC's 94 years of varsity hockey.
As the calendar turned to November, Demko picked up where he left off and recorded his fourth shutout in five games, marking the first time Boston College has ever accomplished that feat in program history. With the 7-0 shutout, Demko is now tied for fourth all-time on the single season shutouts list with Matti Kaltiainen (2003-04) and Scott Clemmensen (1997-98).
He ranks fifth all-time in career shutouts, posting his seventh with victory on Nov. 3 over Massachusetts. Demko ranks alone in fifth and is now currently one shutout behind one behind Jack Fitzgerald (1922-25) and Matti Kaltiainen (2001-05) for a career. Cory Schneider (2004-07) is the Eagle record holder for career shutouts with 15.
As of Nov. 4, 2015, Demko is in possession of college hockey's lowest total goals against average (0.86 GAA) and best save percentage (.964). Demko and St. Cloud State's Charlie Lindgren are the only two goaltenders with four shutouts to their names this season.
Demko's Goalie of the Month merit marks his sixth conference decoration. The third-year netminder was named Rookie of the Month of January 2014. He was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 9, 2014 and listed to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team and Hockey East honorable mention. Demko was an honorable mention by the conference last year, as well.
Massachusetts' Dennis Kravchenko and Connecticut's Max Letunov were tabbed the Warrior Hockey Player of the Month and Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month, respectively, alongside Demko.
