BC TAKES ON #2 GEORGETOWN IN ROUND OF 16
• Boston College travels to Washington, D.C. to take on #2 Georgetown in the third round of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Shaw Field.
• The Eagles (11-7-1, 4-4-0 ACC) earned an at-large bid to the field with the help of its No. 15 RPI. They defeated Vermont at home and USF in Tampa last weekend.
• BC hadn't won in the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
• Georgeotwn (16-2-2) lost its first two matches of the season and has gone undefeated since. The Hoyas ran the table in the Big East and then won the conference tournament. They beat Hofstra last weekend, 3-0.
BC IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
• The Eagles are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Championship. Head coach Ed Kelly has led BC to 12 of those tournament appearances, earning bids in 1990, 2000-02, 2004, 2007-12 and 2015.
• Boston College has a 7-10-3 all-time record in NCAA Tournament action. It is 1-2 in penalty kick shootouts.
• The Eagles are looking to make their first ever appearance in the College Cup, which will be held at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
• BC reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship in 2002 before losing to Creighton. It also advanced to the third round of the tournament in 2009 before falling to Drake.
ENSTROM NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Freshman Simon Enstrom was named the National Player of the Week by both College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com after leading Boston College to a pair of NCAA Tournament victories last week.
• The Huddinge, Sweden product was credited with both game-winning goals to advance the men's soccer team to the round of 16.
• Enstrom scored in the 71st minute in the 1-0 win against Vermont on Thursday night in Newton. He then tallied the golden goal at No. 15 USF in the eighth minute of overtime to advance the Eagles to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Enstrom ranks fourth in the ACC in goals (9) and eighth in points (21). His five game-winning goals rank ninth in the country.
ENSTROM'S OVERTIME WINNER BEATS #15 USF
• Boston College dominated the first half, recording three shots on net and did not allow USF a shot in the opening 45 minutes.
• In the 14th minute, freshman Simon Enstrom blasted a shot at the top of the box through traffic but was thwarted by USF goaltender Spasoie Stefanovic.
• Enstrom logged his second shot on net from out deep on a feed from junior Zeiko Lewis across from the right side of the pitch.
• Boston College gained a huge advantage in the 26th minute when USF's Lindo Mfeka was issued a yellow card and moments later, was shown a red card to give the Eagles a man advantage the rest of the game.
• Five minutes after the USF infraction, sophomore Idrissa Bangura was robbed a goal by offering a chip shot from close range but Stefanovic made another huge stop by blocking the shot with his right hand extended while sprinting to his left.
• In the 34th minute, sophomore Henry Balf sent a through ball from the top of the box to Lewis
but Lewis' blast sailed high to keep the first half scoreless.
• Enstrom registered a strong header on a cross from freshman Trevor Davock in the 57th minute, giving way to two more shots from Lewis and sophomore Mohammed Moro in the 61st minute but neither attempts were on net.
• The Eagles continued to build momentum and finally broke through in the 74th minute – senior Atobra Ampadu crossed the ball from the right side of the box to junior Isaac Normesinu on the near post. Normesinu gathered it with little pressure and sent the ball to the top of the net at 73:24 for the 1-0 Eagles advantage.
• USF tied it in the 89th minute. Kendan Anderson sent a low pass from the left side of the box to the front of the net where Prosper Figbe one-touched it through to the back of the net to knot it, 1-1, at 88:18.
• The Bulls forced overtime but Boston College went back on the offensive and Enstrom buried a low pass from Lewis in the 98th minute. Davock sent a ball in to the 18' where Lewis quickly relayed it over to Enstrom for the low missile that crossed up Stefanovic to the lower left corner of the net to seal victory for the Eagles in the first overtime period.
