HIGHLIGHTS
Despite another valiant effort that kept the Eagles in each set to the end, the Pittsburgh Panthers, who were fourth in the the ACC standings entering the game, swept BC on their home court Friday evening at the Fitzgerald Field House. Senior Katty Workman led all Eagles with 11 kills while fellow senior Mallori Moffat tallied 16 assists in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
Pitt's Kadi Kullerkann tallied the first point of the set and the Panthers never trailed again, defeating BC 25-20 to take the 1-0 lead. BC fought to keep the game close early, but a 6-0 Pittsburgh run fueled a lead that the home squad wouldn't squander.
Trailing 12-4, the Eagles fought back and pulled within six later in the frame following a pair of kills from Sol Calvete and a handling and attack error committed by the Panthers. However, the Panthers pulled away late to take the early advantage in the match.
Set Two:
The Eagles found themselves in another tight match in the second set, decided by a mere four points. After the two teams split the first few points, they evened it at five apiece for one of the eight tied scores in the set.
Michelle Klinikowski and Katty Workman each registered a kill as BC worked to erase a four point deficit in the middle of the frame, and they re-tied it at 17-all. Once again though, the Panthers potent offense was too much as the home squad finished on an 8-4 run and took a 2-0 lead into the break as the Panthers took the set 25-21.
Set Three:
The third set started similarly to the previous two as both squads came out firing, an effort that kept the match within two points for almost the entire frame. A Pitt attack error brought BC within one at 16-15, but the Panthers scored twice more and held a 20-18. Katty Workman brought it back within one after one of her 11 kills on the night. Two straight kills from Sol Calvete and a Pitt attack error evened the score at 23-all, but two BC attack errors allowed Pittsburgh to complete the sweep Friday evening.
UP NEXT:
The Maroon and Gold travel to Virginia Tech on Sunday to close out the road portion of their season for their 1 p.m. matinee with the Hokies.
