HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
The Eagles and Hokies battled well into the set before the Hokies got the better of Boston College, defeating them 26-24 in the first frame Friday evening. The opening frame, which featured 12 tied scores, went down to the final two points when Virginia Tech followed a service ace with a forced attack error to take th 1-0 lead in the match. Trailing 20-17, the Maroon and Gold fired off three straight points to even the score after a Julia Topor kill and a pair of kills from Sol Calvete. Each of the next eight points were evenly distributed between the two schools as each followed the others score with a score of their own. At the 24-all mark, Virginia Tech's Haley Price tallied a service ace before the Hokies' Cara Cunningham and Ashley Battle recorded an assisted block to end the set.
Set Two:
In the second set, Boston College once again found themselves on the losing end of a back-and-forth match as Virginia Tech took the frame by a score of 25-23. In the second set, Virginia Tech took the lead on the opening serve and never trailed again, holding early leads of 4-1, 10-4 and 13-9. BC fought back in the game and after kills from Topor, Calvete and Workman, all of which were assisted by Mallori Moffat, they evened the score at 23 apiece. However, Tech's Amanda McKinzie tallied one of her 10 kills on the evening to go up one. That was followed by a forced attack error against Boston College that allowed the Hokies to take the second set and head into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
Set Three:
Coming out of the break, the Eagles looked to take an early lead that would give them momentum going forward to get themselves back into the game. Behind a kill from Calvete and a block from Kam McLain, Boston College jumped out an early 4-1 lead in the third set. However, Virginia Tech fought diligently as they even the score at 4-all and split the next eight points with the home team as the score remained tied at 8-8 nearing the completion of the first third of the set. The Hokies went on a 5-2 run to take the 13-10 lead, a lead that forced Boston College to call timeout. Following the timeout, the Eagles cut the deficit to one at 16-15 courtesy of a VT service error and a kill from Calvete, but the Hokies were too strong as they finished on a 9-4 run to take the match 3-0 over the Eagles.
COACH QUOTES:
"I love the way we compete. The girls on the floor. The girls on the bench. Everybody. The energy was good. The competitive fight was there. I've said it before; this team doesn't have quit in them and I really appreciate that and it makes it fun to coach. By the end of the first set, we knew there were some adjustments we had to make in terms of our blocking and unfortunately we were unable to execute them. We knnew what we needed to do and we just couldn't make the change. That's a bit frustrating but the approach is the same as it always is: get in the gym at practice and work on it."
UP NEXT:
