HIGHLIGHTS
Anna Skold tallied six total blocks and Katty Workman recorded a game high 17 kills, but slow starts in all three sets were too much for the Eagles to overcome as they were defeated by Pittsburgh 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Chestnut Hill's Power Gym. Boston College also honored five former volleyball players as part of homecoming weekend celebrations taking place on campus. Maryellen McBride, Ellen Rusnak, Ellen Needham, Eilen Moran and Deanna Herman were all recognized during the break, while Herman added her tile to the sport court in front of the Eagles bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
After the Panthers jumped out an early 9-2 lead, the Boston College offense began to find its groove as Kam McLain and and Katty Workman recorded back-to-back kills to cut into the Eagles deficit. Another McLain kill, one of her four on the afternoon, followed by a forced attack error by the BC defense, allowed the Maroon and Gold to chip away at Pitts' lead, forcing them to call timeout with an 11-6 lead. Trailing 17-10, Boston College began an 10-4 run that helped the Eagles come within two points late in the first set. Kills by Camille Oemcke, Sol Calvete (2), McLain and Workman (2) fueled the run while a tight knit defense for BC caused two Pittsburgh attack errors in that sequence. However, the Panthers went on a run of their own, as they collected four out of the next five points and took the opening frame, 25-21.
Set Two:
The second set was a repeat of the first, highlighted by an early 9-3 Panthers lead, followed by a valient effort by the Eagles to cut the deficit and get back into the set. Trailing 17-10, Julia Topor, Workman, Skold and Calvete each combined for kills while the defense forced a Pittsburgh attack error to cut the Pitt lead to 19-15. After two Julia Topor kills and a matching one from Workman, Pitt was forced to call a timeout as the Eagles had cut the Panthers lead to two, 23-21. Devon Michaelis followed suit with a service ace, but kills from Maria Genitsaridi and Kelsey O'Neill halted the comeback effort as Pittsburgh took the second set 25-23 and went into the break with a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three:
After Pittsburgh started the third set on a 5-0 run, the Eagles went on a 7-2 run to even the score at 7-all behind kills from Sol Calvete and Katty Workman, combined with a pair of Pittsburgh attack errors and a bad set from libero Angela Semen. After the two squads evenly split the games next 10 points, which led to a 13-13 tie, Pitt recorded a kill and forced an attack error to regain the lead to 15-13. The Eagles did not show any quit, as Chris Campbell'ss team later cut the lead to two at the 23-21 mark, but an attack error and a service error from BC allowed the Panthers to take the third set, 25-22, and the match 3-0.
COACH QUOTES:
"Well, the way we started three consecutive sets is not the way we wanted to open up play. We've got to do a better job of being prepared to play right from the beginning of the set. All three sets we settled down nicely after 10 points, but when you're playing from behind, that's always a bit more difficult and that is something we are going to have to fix."
UP NEXT:
The Maroon and Gold continue their homestand with a rare midweek game against Syracuse on Wednesday evening inside Power Gym. Game is scheduled to begin at 5 pm.
