The Hokies speak with media after their 26-10 win over the Eagles
Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer
Opening Statement
"Really proud of our football team…for us to have the discipline that we had last week, mentally and physically, for a three-overtime game, the whole deal, and to come back and play the way we played today. It says a lot about our kids, a lot about our coaches. That's not an easy thing to do. This is not an easy place to play. That's a good football team we played today."
''I'm really proud of our offense. That's a good defense you guys know their stats. I thought our offense played great, other than a couple plays there that I'd like to have back. But eh, just proud of our organization and what we are all about…how we came into a tough place and handled it. It wasn't an easy thing for us to do. I'm proud of us.''
Holding BC to 10 points…
"They did a couple things there that we'd like to play against them better. I give them credit. They have had their injuries. They battled. I think that's one thing you can say about Boston College … they battled hard and they are tough. I'm glad to get out of here with a win.''
Asked about the offensive plan…
"You have to be unpredictable. I like being unpredictable on offense. People call them gadget plays, but I just call them plays. I think anytime you reverse the ball you've always got a shot. People that play good defense and pursue the ball, you've always got a shot. I just call them plays.''
Talking about the team bouncing back…
"We talked a lot about it and we practiced great. I can't tell you how proud I am of this crowd. After a gut wrenching day last week … and the way these guys came back … it doesn't happen every day.''
Redshirt Senior QB Michael Brewer
On play where Michael Brewer caught a pass ...
"We repped it quite a bit. It is something we carry week-to-week and when we play somebody who we feel like we can run it on, we do it. Today, we were able to get a first down on it and keep the chains moving and it was a big momentum swing for us."
On whether the Virginia Tech offense wanted to show a variety of plays early ...
"I think anytime you play a defense that is as talented as [Boston College], up front they're about as good as it gets, and as good as we are going to play this year, it's good to keep them off balance. The reverse pass back to the quarterback, getting wildcat, get a lot of guys up there for the run block. It's tough against a team like that to just consistently line up and run your base zone and stretch plays. You have to mix it up a little bit."
On how good it is to have a bounce back game after last week's 4OT loss ...
"It's great. It's a heck of a lot better feeling now than it was last week. Obviously coming away with a win. Like I told the team in there, we are 1-0 now. We have to make it 2-0."
On what coach Frank Beamer said after the game ..
"Just happy. I've been proud of how this team has worked. There has been a lot of adversity this year, especially last week to lose like we did and then to come out and have a really good week of practice. Guys flying around, having fun playing football. And taking their coaching. A lot of our key players did a really good job all week and especially today. Taking coaching, taking adjustments that we've made on the sidelines and going out and performing. Just to be locked in one hundred percent like it was week one. I think that just shows the maturity of this team right now."
On the impact Travon McMillian has to the offense right now ...
"It's nice to have a go-to guy back there. He has emerged as he has gone on. You said he had 60-something carries in the past two weeks. That's effective. Anytime you can get your back that many carries in two weeks and he's running the ball well, it's a big positive for the Hokies. It takes a lot of pressure off me, takes a lot of pressure off the wide receivers. It gives [the wide receivers] more one-on-one opportunities. We just have to continue what we are doing on offense."
On the change of speed of the Virginia Tech offense in the second half ...
"Like I said, they are a very good defense. Second ranked nationally. We knew it was going to come in spurts. We weren't just going to move the ball up and down on them the whole game. We expected to, and that was the mindset going in, but in reality, we each had to stay patient and eventually we would hit our big plays. Also, coming out with a big lead in the second half and the way our defense was playing, we tried to run some clock out and get this thing into the fourth quarter with a big lead. It was a combination of the two."
On the importance of scoring first knowing the struggles of Boston College's offense ...
"It was big to kind of open up the game like that. I think it was second drive of the game. We put some points on the board early. Seven points. Anytime we get in the red zone we want to score seven. That didn't happen all day today, but we said all week that we wanted to end every drive in a kick, and for the most part, we did a pretty good job of that today. With that, and the combination of our defense playing so well, that is why we won the football game."
On whether the pitch and catch with Cam Phillips was one of the best he has seen this year ...
"I don't know. I guess we'll see it on film. He ran a good route, stacked the DB, like he is coached to do, gave me a little bit of cushion to put it in there, and that's what happens. Seven points."
