BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Redshirt freshman Troy Flutie completed a 66-yard touchdown pass to classmate Thadd Smith in the third quarter for BC's only score and the only score of the second half. It was the longest play from scrimmage of the season for the Eagles and Smith's first career TD.
- The BC defense held the Blue Devils to just nine points and only 33 rushing yards. The Eagles have not allowed a team to rush for 100 yards this season. It was also the third time a BC opponent scored 10 points or less.
KEY PLAYS
- Duke needed just three field goals to take the win in Durham, despite the Eagles holding the Blue Devils scoreless in the second half.
- Freshman Colton Lichtenberg has the chance to give the Eagles the lead with 3:35 to go in the game on a 45-yard field goal, which would have been the longest of his young career, but it he could not connect.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke got on the board first, as Ross Martin hit a 36-yard field goal with 3:12 to go in the first quarter. The Blue Devils were denied their third third-down conversation, this time in the red zone, but took a 3-0 lead on the good field goal after a false start penalty.
- Martin made it a 6-0 game with a 38-yard field goal with just over 10 minutes to go as the defensive battle in the rain continued.
- The Eagles drove 34 yards down the field, but could not attempt a 35-yard field goal after a mishandled snap. Martin made it 9-0 on a 53-yard field goal with 3:40 go in the half. It matched a career long for the Duke kicker.
- After the defense recorded a three-and-out to start the second half, Alston dropped the punt return and Johnell Barnes recovered it at the BC 13-yard line. The BC defense did not allow the Blue Devils to score, putting up a goal-line stand. On fourth-and-one, the Eagles did not concede a point.
- The Eagles got on the board with 28 second to play in the third quarter with a 66-yard touchdown pass from Flutie to Smith. It was the first career TD reception for Smith and Flutie's third. .
- Down by two with just over eight minutes to play, BC stopped Duke and drove down the field 49 yards on eight plays. Lichtenberg missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 3:35 to play, which would have given the Eagles the lead.
- The Eagles stopped the Blue Devils on their ensuing drive, going three-and-out. Junior Matt Milano sacked quarterback Thomas Sirk on third down to give BC the ball back. The Eagles got the ball at the 50-yard line and junior Tyler Rouse rushed seven yards on first down. With two yards to get the first down, freshman quarterback Jeff Smith threw two incomplete passes from the Duke 43 in BC's last stand.
