Eagles Hang Tough With Brown at Yale Invite

Vasilyev, Ren, Urbinati pick up singles wins
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Katya Vasilyev, Jennifer Ren and Jackie Urbinati picked up singles wins, but Boston College fell, 4-3, to Brown in the women's tennis team's first full day of play at the Yale Invitational on Saturday.
The Bears picked up the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. The pairing of Ren and Urbinati earned an 8-4 win in their match, but the combinations of Vasilyev/Emily Safron and Wan-Yi Sweeting/Heini Salonen fell in tight matches.
In singles, Vasilyev drew a three-set win in the No. 1 position, earning a 6-7, 6-0, 7-6 (6) victory over Brown's Dayna Lord, who is ranked No. 118 in the country this preseason. Ren added a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles over Hannah Camhi, while Urbinati claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 6 spot over Ammnu Mandalap.
Sweeting dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Alyza Benotto in the No. 3 slot, while Safron fell in three sets – 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 – to Katie Ta in the No. 4 position. Salonen suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Maddie Stearns in the No. 5 singles spot.
The Eagles were set to open play in the Yale Invitational on Friday, but weather and suspensions halted play. BC got its matches against Yale underway, but play was delayed and then moved from the outdoor courts to the indoor tennis center because of weather, and then later cancelled after electrical issues in the building prevented play.
This weekend, BC is at the Yale Invitational without Lexi Borr and Asiya Dair, both of whom competed in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in California last week. Borr collected three wins in the qualifying bracket and advanced to the Main Draw, but fell in the opening round on Thursday.
The Eagles are set to complete play at the Yale Invitational on Sunday.
