Men's Hockey Bests Brown, 4-1

HANOVER, N.H. – Boston College’s special teams units helped support a depleted roster as the Eagles tallied a pair of power play goals and killed off all five of the opponents’ chances in a 4-1 triumph against Brown on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Ledyard Classic at Dartmouth College.
Senior backstopper Brad Barone secured his first-career victory via 22 saves at Thompson Arena while sophomore forward Ryan Fitzgerald notched his first three-point performance of the season. The North Reading, Mass., native also netted his team-best third game-winning goal of the season.
Sophomores Austin Cangelosi and Adam Gilmour both logged a goal and an assist with each marker occurring on the power play. Junior blue liner Teddy Doherty also doled out a pair of assists, both on the power play.
The Eagles were narrowly edged in shot totals by the Bears, 23-22, but the 2-for-6 power play performance ended up being the difference.
Sophomore Zach Sanford also tallied for Boston College, opening the contest’s scoring early in the opening frame.
The Eagles struck early on a sharp snipe from Sanford at 4:14 of the opening stanza. Gilmour rimmed the puck down to sophomore Matthew Gaudreau in the near corner. Gaudreau managed to win a battle from behind in the corner and kicked it back to Sanford on the left dot. With no one blocking Sanford’s lane, he whistled it past Brown goaltender Tim Ernst to grab a quick 1-0 Eagle lead.
Brown answered quickly on a loose rebound in front of Barone at 7:15. Nick Lappin cleared it out of BC’s end, providing Mark Naclerio with the puck for the initial shot. Naclerio got the puck in front and Barone was not able to corral it. Matt Lorito swooped in and managed to sneak it through in tight to lock it up, 1-1.
Just before the first intermission came, Fitzgerald was in perfect position to toss back a Cangelosi rebound at 19:43.
Senior Destry Straight triggered the play by linking up with Cangelosi in between the circles on a feed that came from the far corner. Cangelosi blasted the one-timer off the post where Fitzgerald was parked to sweep back the carom to recoup Boston College’s one-goal lead, 2-1, before intermission.
Boston College’s penalty-killing efforts kept the Eagles afloat in the second period. BC staved off all four Brown power plays and Sanford nearly netted a short-handed tally on the Eagles’ final kill of the frame, but Ernst stood his ground and thwarted Sanford’s short-side bid.
Once the third period commenced, Boston College earned its chance on the power play and capitalized once it gained a 5-on-3 advantage at 7:42.
Naclerio and Tyler Wood were cited at 7:03 and 7:42, respectively, and Gilmour cashed in moments later at 8:01.
Doherty linked up with Fitzgerald in the slot and after faking the shot, Fitzgerald deferred to Gilmour for the wide-open lay up on the near side to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
Gilmour’s power play rip brought one Bear back to the ice, but the Eagles remained on the man advantage and Cangelosi closed out BC’s successful special teams’ run.
Brown never got settled and with only a few seconds remaining on Wood’s penalty. Cangelosi accepted a pass through the slot from Fitzgerald and tarried in front of Ernst before stuffing it through his pads at 9:22 to cement the Eagles’ three-goal advantage, 4-1.
Brown hailed for a timeout during the final stretch, but BC guarded Barone well up front and never let the Bears pose a threat and held on for the triumph.
Boston College returns to Thompson Arena tomorrow night to take on host Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
Game Notes
- Brad Barone earned his first-career victory on Friday afternoon after stopping 22-of-23 Brown shots. The Medfield, Mass., native’s victory occurred after his second-career start and seventh game played, overall.
- Austin Cangelosi scored his first-career power play goal on Friday against Brown. Cangelosi’s first extra-man marker fell on his 57th-career game. The Estero, Fla., native has now scored three goals in his last four outings.
- Boston College has now scored two power play goals twice this season, including tonight’s victory and the 4-1 win over Massachusetts on Oct. 25.
- Ryan Fitzgerald posted his first three-point performance of the season and third of his career with a goal and two assists. The North Reading, Mass., native’s last three-point outing took place at the Eagles’ last holiday tournament against Penn State (in Pittsburgh at CONSOL Energy Center) on Dec. 28, 2013. Fitzgerald also scored BC’s game-winning goal and now leads the Eagles with three on the season.
- Teddy Doherty logged his third multi-assist performance of the season and now leads the Eagles with 14 points (4-10-14) through this point of the season.
- Adam Gilmour secured his fourth multi-point game of the season and now leads the Eagles in the power play goal department with three.
