Volleyball Drops Five Set Match To UAlbany

Volleyball took on the University at Albany Great Danes in the first match of the Yale University Invitational at 5 p.m. on Friday evening.
Sporting a similar starting line up to last week's BC Invitational starting seven, Head Coach Chris Campbell put Julia Topor, Anna Skold, Sol Calvete, Katty Workman, Brittany Pavich, Kellie Barnum and Lauren Fields on the floor for set one.
A kill from each of the teams' outside hitters, freshman Calvete for BC and Hunter for Albany, started the match. The small point exchange continued, including kills from Skold, Topor and a pair from Workman.
At 10-10 the Eagles grabbed three consecutive points on two attack errors by Albany and a Fields service ace. The Great Danes steadied out for a moment, grabbing a couple points to put them within one but BC pulled ahead 14-17 on Albany mistakes.
With BC in the lead by three Albany called a timeout, which they returned from and proceeded to score four consecutive points, giving the Great Danes their first lead of the game at 17-18. A Skold kill from the middle tied set one back up and gave the Eagles momentum again.
Through the 20s the score remained tight, until two Workman kills put BC up 24-23. The Great Danes pushed from the one point deficit, earning three consecutive points on two kills and a BC attack error. Albany eventually took set one 24-26.
Once again, set two began with two kills from each of the respective teams' outside hitters. An exchange of attack errors commenced for the next four points, tying set two at 3 all.
The Eagles then pulled ahead 6-3 due to an Albany ball handling error, a Workman kill and an ace from Topor. Another kill by Workman gave the Eagles a 4 point lead early in the second set. Freshman middle hitter Pavich saw some action in the middle where she recorded a kill and a block making the score 9-5.
Senior Courtney Castle came into the match after missing last weekend and notched a service ace right off the bat. The Eagles held on to a solid lead, putting balls away and limiting errors down the stretch of set two.
Kills from Calvete, Skold and Topor put BC up 16-10, forcing a Great Danes timeout. Three attack errors from Albany and a service ace from Fields gave the Eagles a hefty 20-10 lead.
Albany attempted to get themselves out of the hole they had dug, but did not succeed. Set two was laden with Great Dane errors in conjunction with minimal mistakes and numerous kills by the Eagles. BC finished set two with a 25-19 win.
The third set started much like the previous two, with exchanges of kills by the two teams. Skold, Pavich and Topor all contributed kills in the beginning of the third set.
At an 8-8 tie a kill from Albany outside hitter Hunter and a BC attack error put the Great Danes up by 2. The two teams went point for point, staying tied until 17-17 when the Eagles rallied off three points on a Barnum kill, an Albany ball handling error and attack error.
At a 20-17 score late in the third the two teams battled toward the 25 point mark. Attack errors were committed by both teams, but the Eagles' small lead late in the game allowed BC to come out on top 25-20.
Set four started with three consecutive Albany points, but the Eagles bounced right back with a Topor kill and two attack errors from Albany. An influx of errors from the Eagles put the score at 4-11 with Albany leading.
BC gathered themselves with a Calvete kill, a Topor kill and two attack errors from Albany. The Eagles grabbed a few in a row, pulling within 4 points and making the score 14-10. After an Albany timeout, the Eagles continued to rally scoring four points in a row thanks to a Calvete kill, Barnum service ace and a Topor kill. At 14-14 Albany called another timeout. Out of the timeout Barnum aced the Great Danes again and Calvete put another ball away.
Late in the fourth set the score was tied up again at 17 all. Middle hitter Skold gave possession back to the Eagles and Fields followed with a service ace. Barnum threw back a set to Topor which she capitalized on, bringing the score to 20-18 Eagles. The Great Danes clawed their way back, tying the game at 21. '
Immediately after back-to-back kills from Topor and Calvete put the Eagles within 2 points of the win. The gritty Great Danes team fought back and took 4 points in a row to steal the win from the Eagles 24-26.
The fifth and deciding set, a battle to fifteen, commenced with a kill from sophomore right side hitter Topor and was followed by a kill from outside hitter Workman.
The Eagles rallied off two more points on a Fields service ace and a another kill from Workman. The Great Danes earned their first point of the set on a kill, but a kill from Topor gave the Eagles back possession.
The Eagles lead 6-3, but a BC attack error, an Albany service ace and 2 kills gave the Danes a 6-7 lead for a moment, but Pavich attacked from the middle and tied the game at 7.
At the 8 point switch the Eagles held the upper hand at 8-7. The teams went point for point down the stretch, neither giving the other any breathing room.
Albany made the final push in the fifth game, pulling within one point of the win at 12-14, but a kill from Workman brought the Eagles within 1 at 13-14. A Great Danes error tied the score at 14-14, but a kill gave the Great Danes the 14-15 lead once again. The Eagles couldn't get back into the match and Albany won on an Eagle attack error.
In the five set loss, the Eagles notched 56 kills, but just a .091% hitting percentage. The Eagles served tough, tallying 9 service aces, but also recording 9 service errors, essentially cancelling out the aces. Sophomore Julia Topor recorded a team-high 16 kills, hitting .190%.
Other notable performances came from the middle blockers Anna Skold who had 7 kills and Brittany Pavich who had 6 kills. Setter Kellie Barnum dished out 46 assists in the five set match. Topor and Workman earned 18.5 and 14.5 points respectively.
The Eagles return to Yale University tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. where they face the University of Minnesota and again at 7:00 p.m. when they face the host team.
