Boston College (2) University of Minnesota (3)
Day two of the Yale Invitational began early on Saturday morning with an 11:00 a.m. match up between the No. 18 Gophers of the University of Minnesota and the Eagles of Boston College.
Set one came with multiple BC runs on Minnesota, with the Eagles scoring four points in a row on the Gophers three times and three points in a row twice. Senior setter Kellie Barnum spread out the BC offense, dishing out assists to pin hitters Katty Workman and Julia Topor and middle hitters Brittany Pavich and Anna Skold.
The Eagles capitalized on their early lead, never lettering Minnesota get into the set, taking it 25-12. The Gophers stayed closer to the Eagles in set two, never trailing by more than three until a pair of kills from Topor and Workman, plus a Minnesota attack error put the Eagles up 20-16.
After a Minnesota timeout late in set 2 the Gophers rallied off two kills in a row, putting them within 2 of the Eagles. Campbell called a timeout to regroup with his team still holding the lead 20-18.
Out of the timeout, the Eagles ran a quick middle set from Barnum to Pavich, earning a crucial point to give the Eagles a three point swing. Minnesota continued to push though, inching within 1 point at 22-21, but a Gopher service error, a kill from Skold and Calvete sealed the deal for a set 2 Eagle victory over the Gophers.
Set three began in typical "down 0-2" fashion by the Gophers, grabbing a 1-4 lead to start the game. Bc managed to notch a couple points on a Topor kill and a Minnesota attack error, but the Gophers then proceeded to score three in a row, bringing the score to 3-8.
Kills from Pavich, Calvete, Topor and Barnum brought the Eagles within three midway through the third set. An exchange of points continued down the stretch of the third set. BC got within 5 at a score of 18-23, but the Eagles could not overcome the early Minnesota lead in the third set. The Gophers took set three from the Eagles 18-25.
After a fight in set three, the Eagles needed to push for the win in set four. BC stayed with the Gophers, but let them run a couple points at a time bringing the score to 6-14. With an 8 point deficit, Coach Campbell called a timeout in an attempt to refocus his team.
Out of the timeout BC rallied off four points to make it 10-15, but the Gophers continued to dominate set 4. The Gophers ultimately took the game 15-25, forcing the match to a fifth and deciding set.
The final set of the Eagles' first match of the day started with a slightly different lineup, with senior Courtney Castle in the opposite jersey at libero.
The two teams chipped away, with the Eagles down by just 1 at the 8 point side-switch. After the change the Gophers grabbed two points to pull ahead 8-10, but a Topor kill brought the Eagles back within one.
A Gopher kill extended the lead to two again, but Barnum took things into her own hands on the next point, dumping the ball on to Minnesota territory and burying the tenth point for the Eagles.
Kills from Workman and Pavich made the score 12-13, but two Gopher kills sealed the deal for a Minnesota win.
