No. 6 Field Hockey Defeats UNH, 4-1
September 28, 2014 | Field Hockey
The Wildcats came out strong to start the game, scoring a goal 20 minutes into the first 35 to put New Hampshire up, 1-0. UNH's Meg Carroll carried the ball down the baseline and crossed to Meg Flatley, who netted the ball for her eighth goal of the season.
"It's one of those things that we've come to expect. UNH is a really good top regional program; we have to expect there to be a lot of pressure. One of the things we've been trying to work on is maintaining our composure through the chaos. There was definitely a mental focus on that," said head coach Ainslee Lamb.
BC responded on a corner opportunity with seven minutes left in the first half. Sophomore forward Eryn McCoy fired a shot from the top of the circle on Katlyn Soucy's stick stop to even the score at one goal apiece. The teams entered the half tied at one.
To put the Eagles up, 2-1, sophomore forward Brittany Sheenan scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season in a scramble in front of Wildcat goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell with 15 minutes left in the game.
The attack corner was working for Boston College as the Eagles netted their last two goals on set corner pieces. With six minutes left, midfielder Emily McCoy followed up on Katlyn Soucy's rebound to increase the BC lead to 3-1.
As time ran out on the clock, Eryn McCoy scored her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season to make it 4-1, Eagles.
"[Associate head coach] Kelly Doton trains, runs, and calls the attack corner. They work really hard on it. It's a critical set piece. The top programs in the country have the ability to execute attack corners and Kelly [Doton] has them executing right now," Lamb said.
Although the Wildcat offense continued the strong pressure, peppering Boston College with nine shots in the second half, junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane had another stellar performance making 12 saves to keep the Eagles in the game.
"There's no question Leah Settipane won us the game today. To give us the opportunity to go down and score four goals, I believe that started with her defensive excellence in the goal today," said Lamb.
With its win over UNH, Boston College has extended its win streak against the Wildcats to five games. BC is now 20-7-1 all-time against New Hampshire.
The BC field hockey home stand continues Friday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. against Wake Forest University.
