For their final match of the weekend, the Boston College Eagles and Northern Kentucky University Norse went head to head at 4:00 on Saturday afternoon in the Steinberg Wellness Center on the campus of LIU Brooklyn.
Coming off of an onerous five set loss to host team LIU Brooklyn, BC was hungry to get their second win of the weekend. Senior setter Kellie Barnum showed her trickiness and dumped one over the net and earned the Eagle's first point as it fell on the NKU floor. The tournament pool continued to prove itself as evenly matched, as the Norse and Eagles each chipped away at the score for the first several points.
After the Norse went up 8-5, Campbell called a timeout, which proved effective, as his team grabbed two points in a row to pull back within one. At 12 the teams were tied, neither squad backing down.
The Norse pulled ahead, notching three points in a row to put them up 13-17. Campbell called his final timeout of the set in an effort to get his team on track, which again put the breaks on a Norse run when Katty Workman put a ball away right out of the break.
Towards the end of set one Barnum favored the middles, dishing out two assists to Pavich and one to Skold as the set entered the final points. Four Eagle points in a row brought the score to an even 20. Three Norse errors and two Workman kills propelled the Eagles to a first set victory.
Set two began with several errors on both sides of the net, but the kills started to come thanks to sophomore right side Julia Topor and freshman middle hitter Brittany Pavich.
The Eagles dropped down 6-9 but then came back with six points in a row, including three consecutive kills from freshman outside hitter Sol Calvete. The Eagles continued to handle the Norse as Barnum spread out her sets to each corner of the floor. BC claimed the 25-20 victory in the second.
The Eagles, who had already played two five-set matches this weekend, were tenaciously trying to take this match in three. Castle, Calvete and Workman held down the back row, refusing to let the Norse put balls away.
Mendes came into the match and put a ball away down the line to give the Eagles an 8-5 lead. The Norse attacked and brought the set to an even 12. Kills from Topor and Calvete gave the Eagles an advantage again, leading 15-13.
Towards the end of the set the Eagles were led by the sparks of multiple kills, ultimately finishing the match in three with a 25-18 victory.
In the three-set sweep of NKU, Workman recorded her third double-double of the weekend with 10 kills and 11 digs. Calvete led the team with 11 kills and an impressive .360 hitting percentage. Pavich tallied 10 kills in the middle with just two errors for a .400 hitting percentage.
Barnum quarterbacked the Eagles' offense with 28 assists and four service aces. Once again, Castle held down the defense digging up 25 balls in the quick three set victory.
Freshman middle hitter Brittany Pavich and senior libero Courtney Castle were named to the All-Tournament team. After finishing 2-1 on the weekend, the Eagles earned a second palce finish at the LIU Brooklyn Tournament.
