ATLANTA, Ga. – The Boston College softball team split Saturday’s doubleheader with Georgia Tech, falling in the first game 6-1, but bouncing back with a 13-3 victory in the second game. After only managing one run in the first game, the Eagles found their stroke at the plate in the second game and two big innings helped them secure their first conference win.
The victory marks the first for BC over Georgia Tech since a 1-0 win on April 4, 2009, and is only the third time the Eagles have beaten the Yellow Jackets in program history.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Megan Cooley walked to lead off the inning, Jessie Daulton bunted her to second and a groundout by Nicole D’Argento put Cooley on third with two outs. Tory Speer came to the plate and roped an RBI double to left field to put BC on the board, but the Eagles would fail to score again in the contest.
Georgia Tech responded with a two-run home run by Alysha Rudnik to left field in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Maddie Lionberger gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-1 lead with a two-run homer of her own in the second inning before Rudnik hit her second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the fifth inning that settled the score at 6-1.
GT held a 6-4 advantage in hits in the first game.
D’Argento let up six runs (five earned) on six hits in five innings and fell to 4-4. Jordan Weed pitched one shutout inning and recorded a strikeout.
The bats woke up for BC in the second game, as a five-run third inning and an eight-run fifth inning propelled the Eagles to a 13-3 victory in five innings.
After two scoreless innings, Boston College broke the tie in the third inning. Madison Paulson and Taylor Coroneos led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Daulton lined out, D’Argento hit a two-run double to left field to give BC a 2-0 lead. An RBI single by Weed and a fielder’s choice by both Tatiana Cortez and Alana Dimaso put the Eagles up 5-0.
GT cut the lead to 5-1 with a solo homer by Ashley Thomas in the second inning, and then pulled within three with a two-run single by Lionberger in the bottom of the third inning.
Boston College then put up eight runs in the top of the fifth to conclude the scoring. Cortez hit a grand slam, her fourth round tripper of the year, Daulton hit a two-run double, Speer walked in a run and DiMaso hit a sacrifice fly to drive Daulton in.
Every Eagle who had an at bat recorded at least one hit. BC had a 10-8 advantage in hits in the second game.
D’Argento (5-4) earned the victory, pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Weed also pitched a scoreless inning.
Boston College (7-5, 1-1 ACC) will take on Georgia Tech on Sunday in the final game of the three-game weekend series. First pitched is scheduled for 12 pm.
