Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College freshman Jon Hilliman was named a co-recipient of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Year honors, announced on Monday afternoon. The running back is tied for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 12 rushing touchdowns.
The 6-foot, 215-pound Plainfield, N.J., native broke the BC freshman record for rushing attempts (185) and is tied for 10th in school record books for single-season rushing touchdowns. The rookie earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference third-team honors from the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association and the league's head coaches. He is currently second on the team with 712 yards and 59.3 yards per game.
Hilliman was the first BC true freshman to record two rushing touchdowns in one game since 2008, notching two in five games - including three in a row - and at least one touchdown in seven games. He earned Corvias ECAC FBS Rookie of the Week honors after running for 89 yards and two scores in the Eagles' win over the ninth-ranked Southern California on Sept. 13.
Representatives from ECAC Division I FBS member institutions completed the voting. Wisconsin senior running back Melvin Gordon was named Offensive Player of the Year, while senior linebacker Mike Hull of Penn State earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Along with Hilliman, Virginia freshman defensive back Quin Blanding earned ECAC Rookie of the Year honors.
The ECAC will host the Annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet featuring the ECAC Football Awards and Lambert Meadowlands Awards on Feb. 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The banquet will honor teams and individuals for their on-field performances during the 2014 season.
