Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College football team fell, 38-19, to Louisville on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. Freshman Jon Hilliman scored two touchdowns for the fifth time this season in the loss.
The Eagles (6-4, 3-3 ACC) took an early 13-10 lead in the second quarter, but could not hold on, as the Cardinals (7-3, 5-3 ACC) outscore them, 21-6, in the second half. The 38 points were the most allowed by the BC defense this season and the 19-point differential was the biggest loss for the Eagles on the year.
With his two scores, HIlliman leads the team with 11 TDs on the year, which is tied for 12th on BC's single-season rushing touchdown list.
Graduate Tyler Murphy was 7-for-15 with 149 passing yards and threw a career-high four interceptions. He rushed for a season-low 41 yards but hit the 1,000-yard mark with 1,006 on the year, becoming the first quarterback to hit the mark since Georgia Tech's Josh Nesbitt did so in 2009.
Louisville was able to put three on the board after Murphy threw his first interception in four games on the first play from scrimmage. Gerod Holliman tallied one of his three picks in the first minutes of action. The BC defense was able to hold the Cardinals, stopping them on third-and-goal and forcing a 23-yard field goal.
The Eagles quickly took the lead back with seven minutes left in the first quarter. Sophomore Myles Willis started with a return of 31 yards and the Eagles ran it five straight times to move the ball to Louisville's 38-yard line. On fourth-and-three, Murphy completed an eight-yard pass to junior Dan Crimmins for a first down to the 29-yard line. Junior Bobby Wolford then caught his longest pass of the season, a 19-yard grab, and was brought down at the one-yard line. Hilliman pushed the ball in to give the Eagles the 7-3 lead.
The BC defense came up big again, forcing a fumble on the one-yard line. Junior Steven Daniels recovered to give Eagles the ball back.
The Eagles went up, 13-3, on a four-play, 71-yard drive in the second quarter. Murphy broke free on second-and-four for his long run of the game, a 28-yard rush. Freshman Sherman Alston followed it up with a 36-yard run to put the Eagles on the goal line. Hilliman ran it in from the one-yard line for his second score of the game. Senior Joey Launceford hit the upright on the extra-point attempt to keep it a 10-point lead.
The defense then stopped the Cardinals on the goal line again. On second-and-goal at the six-yard line, quarterback Reggie Bonnafon was called for an illegal forward pass, losing a down and moving the ball to the seven. Will Gardner completed a pass to DeVante Parker, but senior Manuel Asprilla held the receiver out of the end zone. On fourth-and-goal at the one, the Eagles held strong and Michael Dyer could not get the Cardinals on the board.
After a three-and-out, senior Alex Howell punted the ball 56 yards from the BC one. The Cardinals were able to capitalize on the field position, starting at midfield. Gardner completed a 35-yard pass to Parker and Brandon Radcliff ran it in five yards to make it a 13-10 with five minutes to go in the half.
The Cardinals took the lead with 15 seconds left in the half. Howell's punt was blocked by Stacy Thomas and Bonnafon completed a 29-yard touchdown pass to Parker on the next play.
Louisville scored on the opening drive of the second half to go up, 24-13. The Cardinals moved the ball 74 yards on 14 plays on a drive that eat up almost eight minutes of the clock. Bonnafon capped off the scoring drive with a 12-yard pass to Eli Rogers in the back of the end zone.
The Eagles made it a 23-19 game on the ensuing drive with 3:30 to go in the third quarter. On third-and-five, Murphy hit Alston for 20 yards and on second-and-nine at the Louisville 45, graduate Jarrett Darmstatter made his first career catch, a 42-yard completion. A personal foul on the Cardinals moved the ball to the two-yard line. Murphy connected with Wolford to make it a four-point game after BC's two-point conversion failed.
With BC at midfield and driving, Murphy threw his second pick of the night to Holliman, who returned it 38 yards to the Eagles' 27-yard line. The Cards rushed three straight times, highlighted by an 11-yard TD run by Radcliff to make it 31-19 with just over 12 minutes to play in the game.
Crimmins hauled in a career-long, 55-yard reception to take the ball to the one-yard line on BC's ensuing drive, but the Eagles could not punch it in and Murphy threw his third interception on fourth-and-goal after scrambling to avoid a sack.
After Murphy's fourth interception of the night, third to Holliman, the Cardinals went up, 38-19, on a 36-yard touchdown run by Bonnafon.
The Eagles have a bye week before traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., to face No. 2 Florida State on Nov. 22.
