Rowing Captain Honored At International Education Banquet

Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
In the summer of 2014, senior rowing captain Ellen Burr lived in Dublin, Ireland while participating in an internship at Aviva Stadium, the home of the Irish national rugby and soccer teams. Burr obtained this opportunity through the BC Office of International Programs and the McGillycuddy-Logue Center for Undergraduate Global Studies.
“I did work with their social media and also experienced general stadium management and operations. I have always wanted to pursue a career in sports broadcasting and media, so my internship with Aviva could not have been a better fit,” said Burr.
Outside of work at Aviva, Burr lived with other BC students at University College Dublin (UCD). Though she was studying abroad this summer, Burr did not allow her training to slip. The Cazenovia, N.Y. native practiced and competed with the UCD Women’s Club Rowing team.
“As a student-athlete, I didn’t have the opportunity to go abroad during the school year, so the program was the perfect combination of abroad and internship experience,” said Burr.
As any student who travels abroad, Burr has fond memories of her experience. Some of her favorite include working with the groundsmen on the “pitch”, or field at Aviva Stadium and gaining a new appreciation for the science that goes into maintaining the stadium's centerpiece, a trip to the Aran Islands and competing in the Irish National Championships with the UCD women’s rowing team.
“I learned through my experience working at the stadium and through rowing with UCD that sport really does have the power to connect people from all corners of the world. Through a shared love for sport and competition, I really bonded with some truly incredible people this summer,” recalled Burr.
For her efforts and success in the Dublin internship program, Burr received the Award of Excellence for Best Student at the Banquet to Celebrate International Education Week 2014 last Friday.
