The Eagles (4-6 ACC, 9-12) and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (2-10 ACC, 5-18) faced off at The Heights on Sunday afternoon in their second match of the season. Once again, the two teams fought through five sets, but this time the Eagles came out on top, securing their fourth ACC victory of the season.
The Eagles were led by strong hitting from their middles, who both hit over .350 %. Junior Kam McLain had 11 kills, one error and led the team with a .417 hitting percentage. Sophomore Anna Skold had 10 kills, two errors and hit .364 %. The pin hitters also produced, as outside Katty Workman (16 kills, 11 digs) and Sol Calvete (10 kills, 13 digs) both recorded double-doubles. Workman tied the all-time double-double record with 38. Setter Kellie Barnum had another great outing for the Eagles, earning 51 assists. Senior libero Courtney Castle tied her career single-match high with 25 digs in the five-set match against Notre Dame.
As a team, the Eagles had 11 service aces, tying their second most this season. BC had 9.0 total team blocks and 61 kills.
The beginning of the match started as anticipated, a back and forth battle. BC earned five in a row entering double digits, forcing ND to call a timeout while holding a 13-9 lead. The Eagles extended their lead to 17-12, but the Irish battled back and brought the score within two at 17-15. Coach Campbell called timeout to regroup his squad. Campbell’s timeout was justified, as the Eagles went on to win set one 25-21.
The Fighting Irish came out strong in set two, taking a 4-0 lead before the Eagles finally put one on the board. The Eagles had seven kills, led by Skold’s four to bring the score to 13-10 BC. The Eagles continued to excel, spreading out the ball to multiple hitters and reaching 20 first and ultimately winning the set 25-18.
This point the match, BC up 2-0, was in the same as when the Eagles visited Notre Dame. In the last matchup BC won the first two sets before dropping the next three and losing to the Fighting Irish.
Set three was an offensive battle, both teams firing on all cylinders at the net. The Fighting Irish pulled ahead to 12-8 after trading points for the first few plays. BC called their first timeout of the set with ND up four points. The Fighting Irish continued to put balls away and put pressure on the Eagles with their serves, pulling out to a 16-10 lead before Campbell called another timeout. ND pulled to a 23-16 lead and BC pushed back, but the Fighting Irish won set three, 25-21.
The Eagles were fired up in set four, determined to not repeat their last match versus Notre Dame and jumped out to a 7-4 lead. BC and the Fighting Irish butted heads for the entire fourth set, as the Eagles worked for the win and ND fought off the loss. The Eagles reached 20 first, but ND tied it up at 21. The Fighting Irish prevailed in set four, 25-23, once again forcing a five-set match with the Eagles.
Barnum and Workman were ruling the court at the beginning of set five with Workman kills three of the four Eagle points at the first time out. BC led 8-2 at the side switch. The Eagles continued to dominate, reaching 14-3, before ND earned three points in a row, bringing the score to 14-6, forcing a BC timeout.
The Eagles have matched their highest ACC win total under head coach Chris Campbell at four, with eight conference games remaining. BC will have a chance to eclipse their win record next weekend as they face North Carolina and Clemson at home on Friday evening (7:00 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (12:00 p.m.). Sunday afternoon will be Senior Day for the Eagles.
