Volleyball Stymied By No. 8 North Carolina

The Eagles (4-7 ACC, 9-13) and No. 8 Tar Heels of North Carolina (10-1 ACC, 19-2) matched up for the second time this season on Friday evening at the Heights. The nationally ranked Tar Heels swept the Eagles for the second time this season in Friday night's match.
In the three set match Katty Workman was the lone Eagle to hit double digits with 12 kills and a .312 hitting percentage. Julia Topor followed with nine kills, while middle Anna Skold and outside Sol Calvete both tallied seven on the night.
Middle blocker Kam McLain led the Eagles with two solo blocks and two block assists, contributing three of BC's five blocks. Senior setter Kellie Barnum had 24 digs and 10 digs, while libero Courtney Castle contributed 17 digs.
In set one both teams came out firing on all cylinders, as the Eagles kept it tight with the top-ten ranked Tar Heels. UNC pulled out to a 15-13 lead and Coach Campbell called timeout to regroup.
The visitors continued to put pressure on their hosts and pulled out to a 17-13 lead, forcing Campbell to call another timeout. UNC used their momentum and sealed the first set 25-20. The Eagles out-killed the Tar Heels in set one 16-14, but UNC hit .364% as opposed to BC's .170%.
The Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set two, before the the Tar Heels closed the lead to 10-9. Strong blocking and hitting from the Eagles allowed them to hold the lead until the Tar Heels capitalized and took their first lead of the set at 13-12. A couple of blocks from the tall Tar Heels' front row gave the visitors a 16-13 lead.
The Eagles rallied back within one, but then lost their momentum when the Tar Heels rallied off several kills in a row to take a 20-16 lead. UNC did not let up as they barrelled towards 25, ultimately taking set two 25-18. BC had four blocks in set two, paired with ten kills, while the Tar Heels put up 5 blocks and had 14 kills.
Set three was another neck-and-neck start, as the two teams traded points in the single digits. The Tar Heels had a little run and grabbed their largest lead of the set at 10-7 before a service error, returning the ball to the Eagles.
BC brought the score within one at 12-11. UNC then put away a few balls to extend the lead to 14-11. The Tar Heels held their lead for the rest of the set and finished the sweep with a 25-20 victory in set three.
The Eagles will be back on the Power Gym floor on Sunday when they face Clemson at noon for Senior Day where Barnum, Castle and Lauren Fields will be honored.
