Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Volleyball hosted Syracuse University for their first home ACC match of the season on Sunday at noon. Going into the match, the Eagles were 1-1 in ACC play and 6-7 overall, while the Orange was 0-2 in ACC play after getting blanked in North Carolina last weekend.
The Eagles came storming out, in set one, seeking revenge for last year's two losses to the Orange. BC pulled ahead by five points at 13-8 after three consecutive kills from Sol Calvete.
The Eagles maintained their substantial lead throughout the rest of the first set, thanks to setter Kellie Barnum spreading out the offense and kill production from Calvete, Katty Workman, Julia Topor and Anna Skold. The Eagles took set one at a comfortable 25-18.
BC began set two even stronger, earning five consecutive points before Syracuse got on the board with a kill. The Orange kept themselves in the game by sealing the net and blocking extremely well.
The two teams battled it out through set two, with neither team holding more than a two point margin from 10 to 20 points. At 20 all, two costly attack errors by Syracuse gave BC a 22-20 lead, but then a kill by the Orange and an Eagles attack error tied it again at 22.
A Topor kill and two errors by Syracuse finished off set two with the Eagles taking it 25-22.
Set three showed a determined Syracuse team, fighting to stay alive in the match. The Orange took a 6-1 lead and maintained a solid margin until the Eagles chipped away at it, tying the third set at 11.
The final set of the match was an offensive battle, as the Eagles tallied 19 kills and Syracuse notched 15. The Eagles held match point four times before ultimately winning the set 30-28 and sweeping the match 3-0.
"To be able to come out and rebound from our tough match against Pitt is really good for us and the program. There were crucial moments during this match when we were able to stay within our game and our game is pretty good when we don't try to overdo things. The real challenge for us is to maintain that composure and continue to do that. We are getting better at it and that's the process of learning how to play the game," said Coach Chris Campbell following the match.
In the three set sweep over ACC opponent Syracuse, three Eagle hitters recorded double digit kills, as Topor had 15, Workman put away 14 and Calvete gathered 13. Calvete recorded her sixth double-double of the season pairing her 13 kills with 11 digs.
Freshman middle hitter Brittany Pavich tallied six kills and a .444 hitting percentage. Sophomore Anna Skold tallied three kills and a block assist. Barnum recorded 39 assists in the three set match.
The Eagles are off to their best start in the ACC in five years and will be back in action in the Power Gym next weekend when they face Duke on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and Miami on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
