Reigning ACC Champions, the Duke Blue Devils, travelled to the Heights on Friday evening for their first and only match up with BC of the season. The Eagles, coming off a win over Syracuse were ready to play, but a seasoned, well-rounded Duke team ousted them in three sets.
BC started set one well, grabbing a significant lead until the Blue Devils got their blocking game going, finishing set one with six total blocks.
The Eagles were sporting a different lineup than usual due to multiple injuries. Courtney Castle moved into the outside position, which she is familiar with, as she played there for her three previous years, but she has not played there all season. Lauren Fields put on the libero jersey and ran the back row, while Sarah Mendes, rostered as an outside hitter, played middle.
The Eagles and Blue Devils battled it out through the first points of the match. But after a five point run from Duke, the Eagles were unable to shift the momentum and dropped set one, 25-17.
Set two began similar to the first, with the Eagles snagging a 4-0 lead. The Blue Devils showcased their veteran hitters and notched 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage in set two, while BC struggled with an unfamiliar front row, recording 11 kills and a .079 hitting percentage.
The set was tight through the single digits, but a few kills from the Blue Devils once again gave them a large lead which BC could not return from. Duke took set two 25-15.
After the ten minute break, both teams came out firing. The Eagles were pushing to stay alive in the match, while the Blue Devils were working to close it out.
Kills were exchanged, but ultimately, Duke’s ability to seal the net gave them the upper hand. BC stayed close to Duke until the twenties, when two Duke kills, two BC attack errors and a Blue Devil service ace gave Duke set and match victory at 25-18.
In the three set sweep, BC recorded 33 total kills while Duke tallied 47. The Eagles hit just .088 percent at the net, as the Blue Devils shut down their offense with 14.0 total team blocks.
BC was lead by sophomore right side Julia Topor who had 10 kills. Katty Workman gathered 9 and middle Anna Skold notched 5 kills and an impressive .308 hitting percentage versus the reigning ACC Champions. Fields picked up 14 digs as the libero and Kellie Barnum controlled the BC offense with 25 assists.
The Eagles are now 2-2 in ACC play and will face University of Miami on Sunday at noon in the Power Gym.
