Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College football team travels to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference Network and WEEI 93.7 FM and the BC IMG Radio Network.
The Eagles (5-3, 2-2 ACC) look to become bowl eligible with their sixth win of the season. After missing a bowl game for three years, they earned a bid under then first-year head coach Steve Addazio in 2013. BC is also perfect on the road in 2014, beating Massachusetts, NC State and Wake Forest. The Eagles are coming off a 23-17 victory in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Hokies (4-4, 1-3 ACC) have had nine days to prepare for Boston College after falling, 30-6, to Miami last Thursday. They are 2-3 in Lane Stadium but have only one a conference game against North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Virginia Tech's other ACC losses are to Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh.
Both teams have defeated a top-10 opponent this season. On Sept. 6, the Hokies beat No. 8 Ohio State, 35-21, in Columbus. The following week, the Eagles topped No. 9 Southern California, 37-31, in Chestnut Hill. It marked only the second time in ACC history that two of the conference's unranked teams defeated a pair of top-10 opponents in same year. In 1981 when Clemson beat No. 4 Georgia Tech and Georgia Tech beat No. 1 Alabama.
Virginia Tech holds a 15-7 series advantage in the all-time meetings between the two squads. Between 1993 and 2013, the teams have met every year except 2004. From 1993 to 2003, the teams faced off in BIG EAST play. The Eagles were just 3-8 in those games and the Hokies put together a seven-game win streak between 1996 and 2002. Since BC joined the ACC in 2005, the Eagles are 4-7 against the Hokies, playing them every year as cross-divisional rivals.
In 2007 and 2008, the Eagles beat the Hokies in the regular-season matchup but Virginia Tech got the best of BC in the ACC Championships game. Including the 2008 conference title game, the Hokies took five straight before the Eagles earned last year's 34-27 victory at The Heights. The 2007 game marked one of the most memorable in recent history for BC as quarterback Matt Ryan threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Andre Callender with 11 seconds left and the No. 2 Eagles stayed undefeated with a 14-10 victory over No. 8 Virginia Tech.
