Dartmouth Defeats Men's Soccer, 1-0
October 28, 2014 | Men's Soccer
Chestnut Hill, Mass. -
Alex Adelabu scored in the 89th minute to lead Dartmouth past the Boston College men's soccer team, 1-0, on Tuesday night in a non-conference game at the Newton Soccer Field. BC is now 5-7-3 on the season, while Dartmouth improved to 9-4-1.
Boston College had only five shots in the game, while Dartmouth had 18, including 13 in the second half. Dartmouth had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
The story of the night for BC was the play of senior goalkeeper Keady Segel. A native of Rockport, Segel was making his season debut. He made two saves in the first half and managed to make five in the second half.
Just five minutes into the match, Segel made a save on Adelabu who broke into the box off a bouncing ball. Segel came out and cut the angle down and deflected the ball out of the area.
In the second half, the Dartmouth offense just kept the pressure on the Eagles defense. In the 47th minute of the match, Emory Orr had a shot inside the six-yard line and Segel turned it away. Off the rebound, Giorgia Gorini's shot Segel smothered and cleared the ball out of the box.
With 15 minutes left in the match, Adelabu was on the far side of the goal at the end of a cross from the left side. He slid but the shot went just wide.
Dartmouth kept coming at BC as Robin Alnas nearly scored as he went near post with four minutes to play. Segel came out to cut the angle down, which sent the shot just wide of the post.
With two minutes left, Gabe Stauber broke into the box but again, Segel was there and he collided with the Dartmouth forward but made the save. After a stoppage of time, Dartmouth responded with a goal by Adelabu off a cross from Alnas. The Dartmouth forward one-timed the pass for his sixth goal of the season.
BC's offense never generated a threat to the Dartmouth defense. The Eagles only shot on goal came in the first half by Diego Medina-Mendez. Boston College (5-7-3, 1-5-1 ACC) is back in action on Friday when it travels to New York to play Syracuse.
