RALEIGH, N.C. - The Eagles (8-12, 3-6 ACC) travelled to Raleigh. N.C. for their second ACC match of the weekend, where they took on the Wolfpack of North Carolina State (13-8, 2-7 ACC) on Sunday afternoon. It proved to be a tough trip down south for the Eagles as they took their second loss of the weekend against the Wolfpack in four sets.
In the four game match the Eagles were led offensively by Katty Workman who recorded 12 kills. Senior setter Kellie Barnum dished out 31 assists in the match. Freshman outside hitter Sol Calvete had a strong afternoon, putting away eight kills and leading the Eagles in digs with 18. Courtney Castle, the libero, had 15 digs. Overall, the Wolfpack simply outplayed the Eagles. BC recorded 40 kills, 56 digs, seven blocks and an ace, but NC State had 55 kills, 66 digs, 13 blocks and five aces.
The Eagles led the first set the entire time, edging the Wolfpack 25-23, and tallying a .053 hitting percentage to NCSU’s .064 percentage. Workman and Calvete both notched three kills in the first set.
The host team came storming back in set two, leading the whole set, and ultimately winning 25-14. Workman had a strong second set, recording five kills. Through two sets, the Eagles were hitting just .026 percent.
BC raced out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, forcing the Wolfpack to call a timeout and regroup. The timeout worked in their favor, as State brought the score within one at 8-7. The Eagles and Wolfpack battled it out in the third set, both working to swing the match in their favor. BC reached 20 first, but NCSU capitalized on the Eagles’ errors and put away their own balls, taking set three 25-22.
The Wolfpack took advantage of their momentum from sets two and three, finishing the match in four and preventing a fifteen point fifth set. In set four the Eagles were unable to ever obtain a lead, ultimately losing 25-17.
The Eagles will have a bye next Friday but will play Notre Dame at home on Sunday after facing the Fighting Irish just last week, a match which they lost in five.
