Women's Soccer Defeats Louisville, 1-0
October 12, 2014 | Women's Soccer
The Boston College women's soccer team picked up its ninth win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Louisville in an ACC matchup on Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. Boston College is now 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the ACC, while Louisville is now 5-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the conference.
"We talked about getting back to BC soccer and that's what we did,'' said head coach Alison Foley. "We had heart, grit and just ground it out to get the win.''
Sophomore Hayley Dowd gave BC a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the match. The Eagles sophomore won a ball over midfield and dribbled right up the middle into the box with three defenders on her. Dowd cleared a small window on her left foot and placed the ball by a diving goalkeeper for the BC lead.
It was Dowd's league leading 11th goal of the season and third in two games. The goal was also Dowd's fourth game-winning goal. She has notched a point in eight games for the Eagles this season.
BC starting goalkeeper Alex Johnson was tested once in the first half. In the 33rd minute, Johnson (four saves) tapped a shot from the left side over the crossbar to keep the Eagles up, 1-0.
At the half BC held a 4-2 edge in shots and had three corner kicks to one for Louisville.
Louisville came out attacking from the start of the second half. Kari Weinland tried to chip the ball over Johnson from the right corner. Johnson held her ground and deflected the ball out of the box.
Eagles junior Lauren Bernard had a nice chance in the second half from 15 yards away but the shot went high over the left corner in the 57th minute of the game. In the 63rd minute, Johnson dove for a long shot from Louisville went down on her injured knee. The Eagles sent in freshman Darien Dunham to replace Johnson. Dunham had started the five games in which Johnson was out injured.
After a save by Dunham, Johnson reentered the game just as Louisville had a free kick from 20 yards out to the left of goal. Off a deflection in front, Johnson came out and punched the ball out of the area with 19 minutes to play.
Four minutes later, Dowd played a great ball to the far post that Andrea O'Brien headed back towards the goal but it was cleared by Louisville. A minute later, Stephanie McCaffrey had a chance from 20 yards out but the Louisville goalkeeper was holding the week side and made the save.
Louisville threatened with a corner kick with 12 minutes to play but Dowd cleared the ball on a header and BC worked the ball back up the field. With 10 minutes to play Weinland broke in off a long ball. She was to the left of Johnson but her shot flew high from 12 yards out.
Boston College will play next on Sunday against NC State at 1 p.m. Fans can continue to follow the Eagles on Twitter/@bc_wsoc.
