Women's Soccer Tops NC State, 1-0, in OT
October 19, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Cambridge, Mass. -
Sophomore Hayley Dowd scored four minutes into overtime to lead Boston College past NC State, 1-0, at Soldiers Field Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The win gives BC a 10-6-0 overall record and 3-4-0 in the conference. It marks the 17th consecutive season in which Boston College has won 10 or more games.
The Eagles goal came on a set piece as Dowd was dropped just outside the box as she pushed the ball forward. BC junior Lauren Bernard, who was active all day down the sideline, sent a beautiful ball into the box and Dowd beat everyone to the ball, and headed it over the NC State goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes (13 saves) hands into the net for the win.
It was Dowd's ACC leading 12th goal of the season, as well as her fifth game-winning goal. Dowd has now recorded a point in nine of the Eagles 16 games. For Bernard, it was her sixth assist of the season, and third game-winning helper.
Boston College came out shooting as junior Jana Jeffrey had a shot on goal just 20 seconds into the match. She led the offense with 10 shots.
NC State ((2-11-2, 0-7) had a great chance 26 minutes into the half. BC senior goalkeeper Alexandra Johnson (two saves, 9-1 record) came out towards a long ball sent into the box. She cleared a one-touch shot from NC State's leading scorer Kayla Saager to preserve a 0-0 game.
BC had a great chance with 14 minutes to play when Dowd was dropped just outside the box. Jeffrey took the shot from outside of the box but NC State blocked the shot.
At the half, Boston College held a 10-1 lead in overall shots.
The second half was much the same. BC continued to attack the Wolfpack with much of the attack coming from the duo of Bernard and sophomore midfielder Rosie DiMartino. The two worked the left sideline together and created a number of solid opportunities for BC.
In the 65th minute, Stephanie McCaffrey sent Dowd into the box to the left of the goalkeeper. Dowd's shot was to the far post and the NC State keeper dove and just got her fingertips on the ball to deflect it wide.
DiMartino had a great chance with 47 seconds to play off another great feed from McCaffrey. DiMartino cut the ball back, and by the time she got a shot off, the goalkeeper was lined up for the easy save.
At the end of regulation, Boston College had a 26-5 edge in shots and a 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
The Eagles finally tallied the game-winner just four minutes into overtime. The Eagles earned two corners in the overtime but it would be a foul on NC State that created the goal. Dowd was attacking down the right sideline when she was dropped as she was making her way into the box.
Bernard, who took a majority of the corner kicks for the Eagles all day, took the free kick and placed it high into the box. Dowd, who is the Eagles best player in the air, out-jumped the goalkeeper and directed it into the near post for the win.
The Eagles finished the match with a season-high 28 shots taken and 14 shots on goal. BC also had a season-high 11 corner kicks in the match.
Boston College will head out on a two-game road trip. The Eagles will play at Wake Forest on Thursday at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on the Demon Deacons website. On Sunday, October 26, Boston College will play at Duke at 1 p.m. before returning home for the final regular season game of the year against Notre Dame on November 1.
