Boone, N.C. - No. 12 Boston College field hockey took down Appalachian State, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at Brandon and Erica M Adock Field. BC is now 9-5 on the season and 3-0 in the all-time series against Appalachian State. Boston College has shut out the Mountaineers in all three wins.
The Eagles came out strong to start the game, applying relentless offensive pressure in the Mountaineers' circle. Boston College drew its first attack penalty corner less than three minutes into play. Sophomore forward Eryn McCoy took the first shot off the insert, which was saved by Mountaineer goalkeeper Jordan Yaukey. Senior midfielder Emma Plasteras followed through on McCoy's rebound for her fifth goal of the season to put the Eagles up, 1-0, early in the first frame.
Sophomore midfielder Emily McCoy scored her eighth goal of the season than three minutes later after a Mountaineer turnover to increase the Boston College lead to 2-0 with 30 minutes remaining in the half.
On BC's sixth attack penalty corner of the half, senior forward Nina Baumberger Altirriba finished a shot--her first career goal for the Eagles--from junior forward AshLeigh Sebia and Emma Plasteras to make it 3-0, Boston College.
The Eagles forced seven attack penalty corners in the first half and held an 18-2 shot advantage over Appalachian State to take three-goal lead into the intermission.
Boston College drew an attack penalty corner seven minutes into the second half. Eryn McCoy passed the ball to AshLeigh Sebia, who tipped it for her first goal of the season. Sebia's goal increased the Eagle lead to 4-0 with 28 minutes left in the game.
A stroke called against the Mountaineers led to a goal by senior mid/back Abby Bascetta to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead with 12:27 left.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Audra Hampsch made her collegiate field hockey debut for the Eagles, subbing in for junior goalkeeper Leah Settipane with 12 minutes remaining.
Sophomore forward Leah Frome, off a pass from freshman forward Brooke Matherson, scored her fourth goal of the season with less than three minutes left to bring the Eagles to a 6-0 final winning score over Appalachian State.
Goalkeepers Leah Settipane and Audra Hampsch put forth a combined effort to give Boston College its third shutout win of the season.
The Eagles take on ACC opponent Louisville at Travers Field on ESPN3 Friday, Oct. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
