KINGSTON, R.I. - Three different Eagles provided goals as the Boston College men's soccer team defeated Rhode Island, 3-0, Tuesday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
Freshman Zeiko Lewis and sophomore Derrick Boateng scored their first goals of the season. Junior Giuliano Frano scored on a penalty kick and it was his second of the year. Junior Diego Medina-Mendez notched a pair of assists.
Boston College held a 12-4 advantage in shots in the first half, forcing Rhode Island to make eight saves in goal. The Eagles scored early in the eighth minute on their second shot when Medina-Mendez fed Lewis for the first tally.
BC added more pressure in the 24th minute with a couple of shots that couldn't find the back of the net. After a URI defender saved a ball from crossing the goal line, another BC shot was wide of the target. The Rams took down a BC attacker in the box a minute later and Frano connected on the ensuing penalty kick to push the lead to 2-0.
The Boston College defense stifled Rhode Island in the second half and did not allow a shot on goal. The Rams nearly got on the board in the waning moments as Matt Sykes hit the crossbar with 39 seconds left, but the clean sheet was left intact.
Junior Keady Segel made one save for BC in goal and improved to 3-1-2 on the year. URI (1-5-0) keeper Thomas Spenser was credited with six saves.
Boston College (3-2-2, 1-1-1 ACC) is on the road again on Friday night when they take on NC State in Raleigh.
