Softball Erupts for 11-2 Triumph over Bryant

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Led by the first career home runs from Megan Cooley and Annie Sommers, the BC softball team scored an 11-2 victory over the Bryant Bulldogs on Thursday at Shea Field.
Cooley (Mill Creek, Wash.) set the single-season BC runs record of 41 after entering the day tied with Cara Blumfield, who set the previous record of 39 back in 2001. Cooley also set the single-season stolen base record last week against Harvard.
Chelsea Dimon (10-13) went the distance for the Eagles as she surrendered two earned runs on five hits over five innings. Jennifer Jacob (5-6) took the loss for Bryant as she allowed nine runs (three earned) on seven hits over three innings of work.
BC jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the first on the strength of Sommers’ first home run – a three-run shot to left field. Three stolen bases and one Bulldogs error in the field led to the offensive outburst in the game’s opening frame.
After Bryant got a run back in the second, the Eagles extended their lead to 7-1 on Maria Pandolfo’s RBI sac fly that brough home Alana Dimaso. With Tory Speer at third with two outs, CJ Chirichigno lined a RBI base hit up the middle to make it an 8-1 BC lead.
An RBI sac fly by Taylor Bell cut the lead to 8-2 but DiMaso’s run-scoring single in the third made it a seven run cushion once again.
Scoreless fourth and fifth innings by the Bulldogs gave the Eagles a chance to end the game in five innings. Nicole Koszowski drew a walk to open the inning then Cooley stepped up to the plate and sent a fly ball over the right-center field wall to give BC its fourth walk-off victory of the season.
The Eagles will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for the final three regular season games – Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
