Field Hockey Names Three Captains

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team will be led by juniors Sarah Hospodar and Emma Plasteras, along with sophomore AshLeigh Sebia, in the upcoming spring and 2014 fall season, head coach Ainslee Lamb announced on Tuesday. The three players were voted into the leadership roles by their teammates.

"I am looking forward to the leadership from Sarah, Emma and AshLeigh. They will each contribute in different ways to make this captainship a very strong one," Lamb said. Vinnie [Muma], Paige [Norris] and Sarah set the bar very high for the expectations of the captains within our program. They were excellent role models as captains and I am very happy that our team and the newly named captains have them to emulate. All three players are very motivated to have BC field hockey be successful. They are equally committed to the field hockey, academic and personal growth of this program."

Hospodar will be a two-time captain, as she was also voted one for the 2013 captain. A back from Wayne, Pa., she has played in 57 games in her BC career, starting 42. This past season, she tallied one goal, converting a penalty stroke, and made three defensive saves, tying for second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. As an Eagle, she has scored three times and notched two assists. She has also made five defensive saves in her career.

"Sarah returning as a second year captain will certainly help with her ability to apply all of the lessons she learned last year and make the leadership group stronger with her experiences," Lamb said.

Emma Plasteras

Plasteras, a midfielder who hails from North Vancouver, B.C., is a two-time All-American, earning first team honors this season after leading the Eagles with 34 points, 11 goals, 12 assists and four game-winners. She was named to the second team as a sophomore. Plasteras also garnered National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Northeast Region Player of the Year, as well as first-team all-regional and first-team All-ACC honors. She finished the season ranked fourth in the conference in assists per game (0.60), fifth in assists, ninth points per game (1.70), 10th in points and tied for fourth for game winners. This season, she tied for ninth on BC's single-season assists list. She has started 52 of the 58 games she has played in her BC career.

AshLeigh Sebia

Sebia, a forward from Plains, Pa., has donned the Maroon and Gold for 28 career games, starting 25 of them. She has tallied 11 goals and five assists in her career for 27 points. She also scored three game-winning goals. This season, she was tied for fourth on the team with seven goals, tying with senior Virgynia Muma for the second-most tallies on the forward line. She also came up with four assists, as well as the game winner in the 5-2 victory over Harvard on Oct. 23.

For the second year in a row, the Eagles will have a captain representing each of the lines - forward, midfield and back. Boston College finished the 2013 season 12-8 and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. The Eagles lost, 2-1, in overtime to eventual champion Connecticut in the first round. They are losing five seniors, but return seven of their top 10 scorers.

"Sarah, Emma and AshLeigh are extremely proud members of both the field hockey team and the Boston College community," Lamb continued. "I am confident that they will lead this program unconditionally over the next months and we will be in a better place with them leading this very talented group of players. They each present different intangibles that will combine to make a very strong, loyal and committed group. Most importantly, I am excited for these three players to lead BC field hockey as they each reflect the core values that we have come to expect from all of the athletes in our program. They each have a tremendous amount of respect for all of their teammates, so I know they will present an excellent balance with leading when necessary and leaning on their teammates excellent leadership qualities when then need to."
