BOSTON - Junior Ryan Anderson recorded 22 points and seven rebounds as the Boston College men's basketball team lost to Massachusetts, 86-73, on Sunday afternoon in the Coaches vs. Cancer Massachusetts Tripleheader at TD Garden.
Anderson was 8-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the line. He also had three blocks and three assists. Sophomore Olivier Hanlan scored 19 points and junior Patrick Heckmann had 11 points off the bench.
The first 12 minutes were tight and found the teams tied, 19-19, before Massachusetts scored six unanswered points to take a 25-19 lead with 6:50 left in the half. BC stormed back with a 9-2 run to take a 28-27 lead with Anderson scoring six of the points. The Eagles' lead reached six points with 1:31 to go and they took a 36-32 lead into the break.
Boston College extended its lead early in the second half by scoring nine of the first 13 points to build a 45-36 lead at the 16:44 mark. It was all UMass from there as it tied the game by scoring the next nine points. That was part of a 31-9 run that gave the Minutemen a 67-54 lead with 7:52 left.
The BC deficit never went under 10 points the rest of the way.
UMass (1-0) was sparked by Cady Lalanne and Chaz Williams in the second half. The pair combined for 33 of the 54 second half points.
Lalanne finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Williams scored 20 points. Sampson Carter recorded 12 points and eight boards.
The Eagles (0-2) will open at home on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Toledo as part of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
