Blacksburg, Va. - The Boston College baseball team lost, 8-4, to Virginia Tech at English Field on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the three-game series. While the Eagles (13-18, 4-10 ACC) held a lead through four and a half innings and regained it in the sixth, the Hokies (21-12, 4-10 ACC) pulled away, taking a one-run advantage in the seventh and increasing the lead to four in the eighth.
Senior Spenser Payne led the way for BC at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one RBI. Freshman Blake Butera recorded one hit to extend his hit streak to 12 games, the longest of the season for the Eagles. He also tallied an RBI.
Junior RHP Hunter Gordon (1-3) went six innings, allowed 11 hits and five runs, walked two and struck out one. He was pulled in the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs for senior right-hand reliever Kyle Prohovich, who went 1.2 innings, allowed four hits, three runs, three walks and struck out one.
Virginia Tech starter RHP Andrew Aizenstadt went 5.2 innings, allowed seven hits, four runs, one walk and struck out four. Right-hander Jake Joyce (2-0) earned the win, going 3.1 innings without allowing a hit or run. He walked two and struck out three.
The Eagles were the first to get on the board, tallying two runs on two hits in the third. They loaded the bases on a base hit by junior Matt Paré, a bunt single by sophomore John Hennessy and classmate Tom Bourdon drew a walk. Paré scored from third on a wild pitch with both base runners moving up. Butera plated Hennessy on a groundout to second, giving BC a 2-0 lead.
The Hokies cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning as Mark Zagunis led off with a walk and stole second to get into scoring position. Tyler Horan tallied an infield single to put runners on the corners and Johnny Morales plated Zagunis on a sac fly to make it 2-1. Ronnie Shaban nailed one, which careened off the mound for a base hit, but the Eagles' defense turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning and leave runners stranded at first and third.
The Maroon and Gold took back a two-run lead in the fourth to put the Eagles up 3-1. Senior Anthony Melchionda led off with a single up the middle and with one out, Payne knocked one to center to give the Eagles runners at the corners. Senior Andrew Lawrence grounded one to first and beat the throw as the Hokies threw to second to try for the double play, which allowed Melchionda to score.
Virginia Tech tied the score in the fifth as Tyler Horan led off with solo shot over the right-center field fence. Catcher Paré ended the inning when he threw out Chad Pinder trying to steal, who had reached on an infield single.
The Eagles retook the lead in the sixth as junior Rob Moir singled up the middle to extend his hit streak a career-long 10 games. After stealing second, Payne tallied his second hit of the game, a double to left, to score Moir and give the Eagles the 4-3 lead. Gordon came through by retiring the side in order to hold the lead through six.
The Hokies took the lead in the seventh, scoring two runs to go up, 5-4. They loaded the bases on a single, hit by pitch and a walk and Prohovich to relieve Gordon. Morales laced one through the left side to score two. After a groundout, Prohovich intentionally walked Pinder to reload the bases and then got Rash swinging for the second out. He ended the inning on a groundout to preserve the one-run deficit.
Virginia Tech added three runs in the eighth to seal the win. With two down, Zagunis drew a walk and scored on a Horan triple to the corner in right. Horan then crossed the plate on a base hit through the left side by Morales. Shaban finished off the scoring with a double off the wall to bring in Morales.
The Eagles and the Hokies finish the series on Sunday, April 8 at 1 p.m.
