Blacksburg, Va. - The Boston College and Virginia Tech baseball teams are raising awareness of ALS during their Friday night game at English Field in Blacksburg.
Former BC player and current director of operations Pete Frates was recently diagnosed with the disease. Frates played for three years under current VT coach Pete Hughes when Hughes was at The Heights.
Both teams are wearing special batting practice jersey during warm ups and Frates gave a pre-game speech to the Eagles before they took the field for BP. The jersey has the ALS awareness ribbon on the front and Frates's name and number three, which he wore at BC, on the back.
Frates will also throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Frates and his family have set up a foundation called The Pete Frates #3 Fund. A website will be live soon.
