Chestnut Hill, Mass. - For the second time this season, senior captain Anthony Melchionda was named Atlantic Coast Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon. The shortstop hit .421 on the week and drove in seven runs as the Eagles (9-13, 2-7 ACC) went 3-2, beating 14th-ranked Georgia Tech twice.
The Braintree, Mass., native helped lead BC to its first two ACC wins over the Jackets on Friday and Saturday. Three of Melchionda's eight hits on the week were for extra bases, including a home run in the 15-7 win over GT on Friday. He went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs in that game and on Saturday, he went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, sparking BC's 4-3 comeback win. The multi-hit games were his second and third of the week, as he also helped the Eagles to an 8-5 victory at Bryant on Wednesday, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. He also drove in the Eagles' lone run on a sacrifice fly in the 3-1 loss to Holy Cross on Tuesday in the home opener.
Melchionda, who has started all 22 games at short this season, also earned the conference's weekly accolades the first week of the season when BC swept then-No. 17 Virginia, James Madison and then-No. 35 Coastal Carolina. He tallied a .429 batting clip, which included three doubles and a home run, and six RBIs.
He currently leads the team with 19 RBIs and is second with a .322 batting clip, a .522 slugging percentage, three home runs and nine doubles.
Virginia's Branden Kline earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Eagles take on cross-town rival Northeastern at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Brookline, Mass., before a five-game home stand starting with Bryant on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
