King, Westphal Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Boston College senior Jillian King and freshman Liv Westphal were announced as 2011 Division I All-Academic Honorees by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday. This is the third academic distinction for King, a pre-med major, in the sport of cross country. Westphal garnered her first award in her rookie season.
The duo led the Eagles in the final three meets of the year: the ACC Championship, Northeast Regional and NCAA Championship. Boston College took second in the conference and in the regional en route to a 12th place finish at nationals, its best in 10 years.
National champion Sheila Reid, of Villanova, was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight time. Reid defended her crown at the 2011 NCAA Championship, leading the Wildcats to a third place team finish.
The Eagles make up a total of 104 student-athletes from 67 institutions on the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. The Big Ten and BIG EAST led all conferences with 15 honorees, while the ACC followed with 14.
To be eligible, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15 (or top 10 percent).
