Women's Tennis Falls to Virginia

Weymouth, Mass. - The No. 55 Boston College women's tennis team fell to No. 9 Virginia, 7-0, on Sunday morning as the Cavaliers (5-0, 1-0 ACC) won every set of the match. The Eagles (3-2, 1-1 ACC) lost their second match of the season, first in the ACC.
Five of the UVA's six singles players hold top-100 rankings. For the second time this season, freshman Jessica Wacnik, ranked 108th in the nation, played in the No. 1 singles position. The Orlando Park, Ill., native fell to No. 29 Emily Fraser, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Alex Kelleher lost to the 30th-ranked player in the nation, Lindsey Hardenbergh, 6-3, 6-1, on court two. Senior Erina Kikuchi was defeated by Li Xi, 6-4, 6-1, on court three and classmate Katarina Gajic fell to No. 75 Erin Vierra, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 5 spot. Junior Olga Khmylev lost her first singles match of the year, losing to No. 85 Hana Tomalijanovic, 6-3, 6-4, on court three. In the No. 6 spot, junior Kelly Barry, lost to No. 76 Maria Fuccillo, 6-2, 6-4.
In double action, 11th-ranked pair Kelleher and Khymlev fell in the No. 1 spot to Xi and Fraser, 8-2, while Wacnik and Kikuchi, ranked 32nd, lost a close battle, 8-7, to Tomlijanovic and Vierra on court two. In the third spot, junior Ina Kauppila and Gajic, playing for the first time together this year, fell to Fuccillo and Hardenbergh, 8-4.
The Eagles return to action on Thursday, Feb. 9 when they take on cross-town rival No. 60 Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., at 5 p.m.
