
Women's Tennis Tallies ACC Victory over Maryland

b>College Park, Md. - The No. 55 Boston College women's tennis team defeated No. 41 Maryland, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in both teams' first ACC matchup of the season. The Eagles improved to to 3-1 on the season while the Terrapins dropped to 0-3.
Maryland tallied the first point of the afternoon, winning two of the three doubles matches. Junior Kelly Barry and partner senior Katarina Gajic fell in the first match of the day on the third court to Cristina Stancu and Vroni Van Berlo, 8-2. On court two, senior Erina Kikuchi and freshman Jessica Wacnik, ranked 32nd in the nation, created a tie by beating Jordan Hansbrough and Mikele Irazusta, 8-4. Juniors Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev, the No. 11 pair in the country, lost to No. 37 Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus, 8-6, on court one to give the Terrapins the point.
The Terrapins recorded their second point with a straight set win on the No. 1 court as No. 28 Stancu defeated Kelleher, 6-0, 6-0. Khymlev put the Eagles on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hansbrough on court four. The junior is 4-0 in singles play this season. Wacnik lost her first match of the season, falling to Belzunce, 6-1, 6-2, on court two. The Eagles surged back, as Gajic earned a victory on court five over Van Berlo, 7-5, 6-3, and her partner Barry tallied the win over Irazusta in the No. 6 spot, 6-2, 7-6.
With the score knotted at three apiece, the match came down to court three where Kikuchi was battling Luus. Kikuchi won the first set, 6-2, but dropped the second 6-1. She came from down 4-2 to win five straight sets and take the 7-5 victory, giving BC the win.
The Eagles return to Massachusetts to face ninth-ranked Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Weymouth Tennis Club.
