Fort Meyers, Fla. - A five-run fifth inning propelled the Boston College softball team past the host institution, 6-3, on Saturday night at the Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament. Senior Brittany Wilkins went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored for the Eagles (3-1).
Sophomore Amanda Horowitz (1-1) struck out five batters, walked three and allowed three earned runs in five innings. Junior Nicole D'Argento picked up her first save of the year, throwing two innings, striking out three and walking one.
Britney Pugh (0-4) lasted five innings for FGCU (3-6), striking out four and giving up five runs on seven hits in the loss.
The Eagles went down in order through the first two innings, while Horowitz managed to strike outs to help hold FGCU at bay.
BC threatened in the third, but Florida Gulf Coast scored to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman CJ Chirichigno singled through the left side and moved up on a sac bunt from sophomore Chelsea LoBue to lead off the top half. The rookie then stole third, before being tagged out at home on a fielder's choice.
In the bottom half, Tori Williams tripled down the left field line to lead off and was driven in by a triple to right from Kelsei Carpenter. Horowitz hit the next batter to put runners on the corners, but buckled down and got out of the inning in part thanks to Wilkins picking off the runner trying to steal second.
Freshman Andrea Filler singled up the middle in the fourth, but the Eagles were unable to generate any more offense.
Boston College took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Senior Ali Lynette-Krech singled to short to lead off and was advanced on a sac bunt by Chirichigno, before taking third on a wild pitch. LoBue singled through the left side, driving in Lynette-Krech, before making her way around the bases on a pair of base hits from sophomore Alana DiMaso and D'Argento. With runners on first and second, Wilkins hit her first long ball of the year for the four-run advantage.
Florida Gulf Coast responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Williams hit a one out single to left and came around when Carpenter's second triple of the day landed in right center. A wild pitch with the next batter enabled Carpenter to score to cut the deficit to two, 5-3.
The score remained unchanged into the seventh, when BC added a run for a 6-3 lead. D'Argento hit a pop fly to center that was dropped and took second with the opportunity. A passed ball moved the Ashland, Mass. native to third, before she scored when Wilkins beat out a single to the pitcher.
In the bottom of the seventh, D'Argento got Emily Lanier looking, Mariah Fernandez hit a fly to center and Jessica Barnes struck out swinging to end the game.
The Eagles conclude the tournament with an 11:15 game versus Tennessee-Martin on Sunday, Feb. 19.
