Women's Tennis Defeats Dartmouth at ECAC Championships

New Haven, Conn. - The 54th-ranked Boston College women's tennis team defeated No. 53 Dartmouth, 7-0, in the first round of the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Yale University on Friday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Eagles (5-3) won the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to beat the fifth-seeded Big Green (2-4).
In doubles action, juniors Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev, ranked 14th in the nation, defeated Rachel Decker-Sadowski and Janet Liu in the No. 1 position, 9-8 (7-3). On court two, senior Katarina Gajic and junior Ina Kauppila defeated Jeri Rechel and Sabrina Stewart, 8-3. Freshmen Jessica Wacnik and Sarah Dalton fell to Akiko Okuda and Theresa Smith, 8-4.
Wacnik came back to defeat Okuda in the No. 1 singles position, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(5). Kelleher, Gajic and junior Kelly Barry won in straight sets in the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Kelleher defeated Liu, 6-3, 6-4, while Gajic beat Decker-Sadowski, 6-2, 6-1, and Barry defeated Reichel, 6-3, 6-2. On court three, after falling in the first set, 4-6, Khmylev defeated Stewart by winning the following set, 6-2, and the tiebreaker, 1-0(3). Kauppila also played to three sets after losing the first set, 1-6. She came back on court six to beat Shelley Carpeni, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Eagles will play No. 1-seed Yale, who defeated Farleigh Dickinson, in the second round at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18.
