CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior forward Courtney Tavener was named Co-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Week for week five of the 2011 season, according to an announcement made by the conference on Tuesday.
"In our program, Courtney sets the standard for the work rate, commitment to preparation and loyalty to her teammates," Head Coach Ainslee Lamb said. "It is exciting to see a player with her passion and impact on BC field hockey get rewarded and recognized for her efforts."
Tavener, a native of Winchester, Mass., tallied her first career hat trick on Sept. 23, propelling the Eagles to a 5-4, double-overtime victory at Virginia and the squad's first ACC win of the season. After a scoreless first overtime period, Tavener took a pass, dribbled through two defenders and fired a shot for the game-winning goal. She added an assist to the three goals to finish the contest with seven points, a career high.
Tavener has started all 10 games for the Eagles this season. She is currently tied for first on the team in total points (19) and is tied for second in goals (7) and assists (5).
This week's recognition marks the first of its kind for the senior forward. She shares this week's honor with Elizabeth Stephens of North Carolina.
Tavener and the Eagles return to action on Friday, Sept. 30, when they host No. 9 Duke at 4 p.m.
