WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Boston College (7-3) field hockey squad was defeated, 2-1, by American (3-5) on Sunday afternoon.
BC played a hard-fought game, outshooting AU, 14-8, and forcing more penalty corners, 8-6.
Sophomore Chapin Duke scored the lone goal for the Eagles. With the goal, Duke is now second on the team in points (14) and goals (7) for the season.
American took an early 1-0 lead just a minute and a half into the game. Jenn Bradley took control of the ball on a quick breakaway down the right side of the field and sent a slap shot past BC's senior goalkeeper Nicole Barry.
The squads' battled in a defensive showdown for the remainder of the half, as neither team was able to find the cage. Coming out of halftime, the standoff continued, but the AU Eagles eventually broke the silence. After 13 minutes of scoreless play in the second half, Alex McMackin got possession of a rebound off of Barry's pads and was able to tip the ball past the Boston College goalkeeper.
With just over seven minutes left in the game, Duke helped Boston College pull within one, as she was able to tip-in a rebound from the right side of the cage. Despite cutting the lead to one, the BC Eagles were not able overcome the two-goal deficit, falling to American, 2-1.
Boston College will return home from its three-game road swing and is slated to return to action on Friday, Sept. 30 against conference foe Duke at 4 p.m.
