Newark, N.J. - Double-doubles from senior Tsvetelina Dureva, sophomore Cagla Sen and freshman Courtney Castle led the Boston College volleyball team in a five-set loss, 25-19, 25-19, 17-25, 18-25, 15-8, to Seton Hall on Friday evening in Walsh Gymnasium. The Eagles (3-7) put up their best numbers across the board, despite falling to the Pirates (7-5).
Sen distributed a season-high 44 assists and career-best 20 digs, while Dureva's 21 kills and 14 digs, along with Castle's career-best 14 kills and 15 digs marked the first time since facing Miami on Sept. 2, 2006 that three Eagles have posted double-doubles in a single match.
BC was superior at the net all evening, out-blocking the Pirates 12.5 to 10. Junior captain Krystle Higgins led the way with seven total blocks (1 solo, 6 assisted) and delivered seven kills in the match.
In addition to stuffing five shots, sophomore Melissa McTighe was equally as dangerous on offense. The middle hitter charted a .333 hitting percentage with eight kills on 21 attempts.
Senior captain Brennan Clark posted a team-high 31 digs. Freshman Lauren Fields added 12 scoops, the rookie's fourth match with 10 or more digs. Boston College recorded 102 digs, the first time BC has put up 100 or more since meeting Wake Forest back on Sept. 24, 2009.
The Eagles stormed out to a 9-3 lead in the first on the arms of Castle and Dureva and Pirate attacking errors. A timeout halted the damage and allowed SHU to regroup. Sen and Dureva continued to put away shots, but the Pirates evened the game at 15. An ace on the next play awarded Seton Hall the lead and it held on for the win, 25-19.
BC came out swinging in the second, pushing its way to a 12-7 lead. SHU's Meghan Matusiak then notched three of her match-high 23 kills to pull within two, 12-10. Another kill and an attack error evened the set and the sides battled back-and-forth to 18 all, before Seton Hall claimed the second set, 25-19.
Fields aced Seton Hall and the Eagles took the first five points to open the third. After an error put the Pirates on the board, kills from Higgins and Castle put BC back on track. Although, Matusiak eventually helped narrow the gap, 12-10, McTighe, Castle and Dureva were stellar on the attack and the Eagles ran away with the third, 25-17.
The fourth game proved to be much tighter, as Boston College maintained a slight advantage over Seton Hall to 15-14. A pair of kills from Dureva and Castle combined with an attacking error stretched the lead to four, 18-14. The Eagle attack handled things from there as BC powered its way to win, 25-18, and forced a fifth set.
An ace followed by a few errors put BC at a 4-1 disadvantage. The Pirates aced the side once again following a timeout and despite kills from Dureva, McTighe and Castle, Seton Hall took the match win a 15-8 decision.
