Newark, N.J. –The Boston College volleyball team swept the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 25-17, 25-16, 25-15, to conclude the Seton Hall Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Walsh Gymnasium. Junior Krystle Higgins executed an impressive .429 attack percentage on seven kills and five blocks to charge the Eagles (4-7) in victory over the Highlanders (3-10).
Freshman Courtney Castle led all players with nine kills, adding four blocks, five digs and a quartet of aces. Classmate Kellie Barnum dished out a match-high 12 assists, also noting two kills, a pair of aces, three digs and a block and three digs.
Sophomore setter Cagla Sen equaled her teammate’s assist total, netting a pair of kills two blocks and an ace. Second year middle hitter Melissa McTighe led all players with seven blocks, posting four kills, two digs and an assist.
Four errors and a kill from Sen allowed Boston College to go ahead, 5-1, out of the gate. NJIT then squared away its attack and closed the gap at 10-8, before Higgins put a shot away to squelch the momentum. A kill from Castle followed and the Eagles capitalized on poor service to distance themselves by seven, 20-13. Another kill from Higgins’ was followed by an error and a kill to give NJIT two points, but the captain and senior Tsvetelina Dureva would provide the needed scoring to take set one, 25-17.
The sides battled to 10 all to start the second. A service error, kill by Higgins and an ace from freshman Lauren Fields gave the Eagles a lead they held the rest of the set. BC maintained the slight edge until two ball handling errors, an ace and kill from Castle expanded the margin to six, 19-13. The Highlanders called a timeout, but could not fix their attack as was evident when sophomore Alex Fitzmorris paired with Higgins to stuff NJIT and win the frame, 25-16.
The Eagles pounced on the Highlanders in the third, taking a 9-2 lead off a slew of kills from Barnum, Dureva, Fitzmorris and McTighe. NJIT worked to get back in the match, but Dureva pushed back the opponent at 11-6. Boston College took advantage of the poor attacking of NJIT and ran away with the set, 25-15.
The Eagles will open conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 5 p.m. against Maryland. Fans are invited to follow all the action live on GameTracker.
