CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College Varsity Four was named the 2010-11 Crew of the Year, according to an announcement made by the rowing coaches on Tuesday.
The Varsity Four raced well in a number of spring races, but their performance in a three-way race against Holy Cross and Connecticut on April 17th was determined by the coaches to be the most outstanding performance of all BC boats of the 2010-2011 season. With less than 200 meters left in the race, the crew looked like they were headed for a 2nd place finish behind UConn, as the team was a full boat-length behind the Huskies. The crew made a decisive move in the last 15 strokes to pull even and eventually ahead, grabbing the win by less than a second.
"They displayed toughness and an impressive will to win in a come from behind effort," commented Head Coach Steve Fiske, who watched from the finish line.
The winning crew was: coxswain: Lauren Beebe, stroke: Victoria Goetz, 3: Stephanie Ragland, 2: Ellen Keenan and bow: Sarah Loiselle. The names of this Varsity Four crew will be engraved on a `Crew of the Year' plaque displayed in the Harry Parker Boathouse.
The plaque is shared with the Men's Rowing Team. The men's Crew of the Year award recipient was the Freshman Eight, who won the New England Rowing Championships. This crew raced well all year and is the first to win this championship for BC. Members of this crew are: coxswain: Max Mitrokostas, 8: John Corbett, 7: Sean Fanning, 6: Justin Lawrence, 5: Chris Samul, 4: Chris Senft, 3: Cayce Jones, 2: Fred Gonfiantini and 1: Nick Caira.
