Chestnut Hill, Mass. –Boston College softball member Brittany Wilkins’ two-run double in the sixth inning of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) U23 Eastern Division National Championship catapulted the Virginia Legends past the Virginia Pride, 6-5, to claim its fifth national title last week at the James Moyer Complex in Roanoke, Va.
Wilkins’ 2-for-3 performance, with a home run, double and three runs batted in played a decisive role in the outcome of the game.
“Winning a national championship is something that I have always dreamed of,” Wilkins stated afterwards. “It was such an honor to have the opportunity to play with so many girls from different schools around the country and come together to win a national championship.”
The Legends opened the ASA Women’s Fast-Pitch Nationals with a 9-0 stomping of Wagner’s Elite and 14-0 thrashing of the Virginia Rowdies in pool play.
In the championship round, the Legends continued to dominate. Coach Bobby Wills’ squad delivered a mercy-rule win, 12-0, against Richmond Elite, before topping Wagner’s Bandits, 4-2, to advance to the winner’s bracket finals.
After trailing by two, 2-0, in game one of the finals, the Legends strung together a seven-run fourth inning to garner the momentum needed to earn the victory, 13-5.
The Legends also trailed for much of the second meeting, but down, 5-4, Wilkins’ heroics proved to be the deciding factor in raising the trophy.
Over the course of the tournament, Wilkins batted .400, totaled five runs, a double, a homer and three runs batted in. The rising senior slugged .700 en route to guiding the Legends to a perfect, 4-0, record.
