King Advances To 800-Meter National Quarterfinal

Bloomington, Ind. - Caroline King led the second section of the 800-meter preliminary round wire-to-wire and earned a spot in tomorrow's national quarterfinal at Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University.
The Eagle took the lead out of lane two and took the field through the first lap with a 1:00.50 split. At 500 meters, King began to lengthen her stride and move away from the pack, but Brown's S. Adelberg and North Carolina's Tasha Stanley closed in heading into the final turn. The captain then broke away and cruised in for the win in 2:06.32.
King's time was the second fastest qualifying time. She will run in the NCAA quarterfinal on Friday, May 27 at 6:30 p.m. A live broadcast will be available through iuhoosiers.com.The first three finishers in each heat, plus the next three fastest times will advance to compete in the semifinal on June 8 at 6:00 p.m (CT) in Des Moines, Iowa.
In section four of the half mile, Caitlin Bailey drew the lane eight starting position. The field went out in 1:03.20, with Virginia's Lindsay Harper setting the tone. Bailey fought her way through the pack and sat on Harper's shoulder at the sound of the bell, but was overtaken on the looming straightaway and came around in 2:09.26.
Jillian King paced the field in the first section of the 1,500-meter run. The Maroon and Gold burned the track for a 2:31 split at the half. King continued to lead the way until about 500 meters to go, when Lucy Van Dalen (Stony Brook) and Hannah Brooks (Florida State) overlapped the Eagle. King fought off the field until the final bend, but was dropped into fifth and hit the line in 4:28.90.
