Baseball Shuts Out Le Moyne, 4-0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Four different pitchers combined to throw a five-hit shutout as the Boston College baseball team beat Le Moyne, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Freshman Eric Stevens started the game and got the win, going 3.0 innings and allowing one hit. Junior Kyle Prohovich also worked 3.0 innings and struck out three batters. Senior Dave Laufer pitched two innings and classmate Garret Smith tossed the ninth.
Only six Dolphins reached scoring position in the game and two reached third base. The BC pitching staff issued just one walk in their third shutout of the season.
Freshman Nate LaPointe went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Junior Andrew Lawrence was 3-for-4 with a double and classmate Marc Perdios doubled and tripled.
BC (17-30) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Lawrence and junior Anthony Melchionda started the inning with singles, then a fly out and a wild pitch moved them to second and third. LaPointe drove them in with a double down the line in left.
The Eagles added to the cushion with two more runs in the seventh. Perdios legged out a leadoff triple to center and LaPointe drove him in with a single up the middle. A stolen base and a wild pitch moved him over to third and then junior Brad Zapenas hit an RBI single.
Le Moyne's best chance to score came in the top of the ninth. Ryan Mahoney was hit by a pitch with one out and Don Schaaf singled to put two men on base. Then the umpires called the teams back to the dugout for a 35 minute rain delay before action picked up again. Upon resumption, a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Kyle Kalaka roped a liner right at Smith on the mound and he snared it, doubling up Mahoney at third to end the game.
Kody O'Connor led the Dolphins (23-30) at the plate by hitting a pair of doubles.
The Eagles take the field again on Tuesday when they host St. John's at 4 p.m.
