ATLANTA, Ga. - No. 9 Georgia Tech used a six-run third inning to capture an 8-1 win against the Boston College baseball team Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Senior Garret Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Eagles (14-22, 6-13 ACC) with a double and drove in the only BC run. Freshman Nate LaPointe was 2-for-4 in his second-straight start behind the plate.
Jed Bradley threw 7.0 strong for Georgia Tech (29-11, 16-4) and allowed one run on six hits. He struck out six and walked one. Brandon Thomas went 3-for-3 at the dish with a homer and two RBIs while Sam Dove was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Jacob Esch added a solo homer and scored twice.
Georgia Tech got on the board with a run in the second with two outs. Daniel Palka was hit on the arm with a breaking ball and then Dove hit the gap in left for a double that brought him all the way around to score.
The Yellow Jackets scored six times in the third to open up a 7-0 lead. Thomas started things with a leadoff homer and then Esch drew a one-out walk. He got to third on a stolen base and an error as the throw bounced into center field, then Matt Skole made it count with a sac fly to left. Jake Davies and Zane Evans continued the rally with consecutive singles and then Palka one-hopped the wall in right for a two-run double to make it 5-0. Dove added an RBI single and then two more base hits from Mott Hyde and Thomas provided the final run.
BC scored a run in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Brad Zapenas led off with a single and stole second to get himself into scoring position. He moved over to third on a groundout to the right side and then Smith brought him home with a sac fly.
Esch put another run on the board for Georgia Tech with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh to make it an 8-1 game.
The three-game series will wrap up on Easter Sunday with a 1 p.m. tilt.
