HANOVER, N.H. - The Boston College baseball team brought a 10-7 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning but Dartmouth scored eight times in the frame to take the 15-10 win Tuesday afternoon at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.
Sophomore Matt McGovern continued his torrid hitting streak by going 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored. He has four hits in each of the last three games and is 12-for-14 (.857) during that span. He has had multiple hits in every game during his current five-game hit streak and is batting .640 (16-for-25) with two triples, eight RBIs and six runs scored. McGovern is batting .511 in 14 games played this year.
Juniors Andrew Lawrence and Anthony Melchionda both went 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Lawrence hit a double and a three-run homer and Melchionda had a two-bagger. Senior Matt Hamlet was 3-for-5 with a triple while classmate Garret Smith was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs.
BC didn't waste any time in the top of the first and scored three runs on the first 11 pitches of the game as the first four batters reached base. Junior Brad Zapenas led off the game with a walk and then McGovern singled to center. Smith took the first pitch he saw the other way for an RBI single and then Melchionda hit the gap in right for a bases-clearing double. A groundout to the right side moved him over to third and Lawrence brought him in with a single for the fourth run of the inning.
Dartmouth did damage in the first as well with three runs of its own. The Big Green loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to a pair of singles and a walk, but a short fly out to left gave the Eagles the first out of the inning. Ennis Coble drove in a run with a single up the middle and Jeff Onstott brought in another with a sac fly. Jake Carlson made it a one-run game with an RBI double to the gap in right.
The Eagles scored another run in the second. Hamlet took the first pitch of the inning off the top of the wall in right for a leadoff triple and Zapenas brought him in with a sac fly to center.
Dartmouth cut the lead to one run before BC scored four times in the seventh to push the lead to 10-5. McGovern and Smith started it off with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners and Melchionda drove in a run with another base hit. Lawrence then turned on a 2-0 pitch and sent it over the right field wall for a three-run homer.
Dartmouth pulled to within three runs in the bottom half of the seventh by scoring twice. Chris O'Dowd led off with a double and then Coble pulled an RBI triple down the first base line to plate the run. Onstott then made it a 10-7 ballgame with an RBI single.
The Big Green then rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the 15-10 victory. Dartmouth loaded the bases with one out and then an error allowed one of the runs to score. Coble tied the game up with a two-run single and then Onstott added an RBI single of his own to give Dartmouth its first lead of the day. Jake Carlson and Brandon Parks delivered RBI singles before Joe Sclafani hit the base of the wall in right-center for a two-run triple to make it a 15-10 Dartmouth lead.
Seven different players had multiple hits for Dartmouth (18-6), led by Coble who was 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Sclafani was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBIs while Onstott went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.
BC (13-17) will travel to Amherst Wednesday to face UMass at 3 p.m.
